View Full Version : Quantum Energy
Hey guys, I'm looking for a "field test report" on Quantum Energy spinning reels. Cabela's has a killer deal going on now, 59.95 on sale, regular price 169.95. I'm thinking about a new spinning reel anyway, so...

Hey Greg. I have four of the E-5-2 and four of the E-5-1 Quantum grinder's . I got mine two year's ago on a clearance deal at G.I. Joe's , there pretty good but shimano are a lot better reel for the money. If the reel's you're looking at have the external bail trip, you're not going to enjoy replacing the bail trip cam's . P.S. they don't like the cold or the rain either, I don't think I would buy Quantum's again. Shimano's are a much better deal in my opinion. Greg got some good used One's for cheap .... The E series baitcasters are nice reels, but stick to shimano like the man said, for your spinning reels. That index finger trigger thing, eventually breaks. They always do, and I've gone through a ton of quantum reels that had that mechanism.

Fred Meyer is closing out some shimano 4000's at 25% off of 39.99. I bought 1 thinking that was a decent deal. The one at 170th and Cornell had about 10 left.
If you have a chance, check out the Okuma Epix reel. They have a display at the Sportfishing show and are available at Bob's in Longview. This company has been building reels sold under other names for a while, but is now selling under their own brandname. I was really impressed with the quality of the reels and they are clearly trying to capture market segment with their very low prices. They don't show the Epix on their web page, but they have a nice line of reels covering all applications except baitcasters. http://www.okumafishing.com/

Greg,
You might want to call on that ad to make sure they still have some. I bought the exact reel and when I did they told me they were sold out of all but the largest size, which is slightly big in my opinion for steelhead. I got the last of the 2nd largest by chance. Maybe they got more but they told me it was closed out.
I do like the reel but haven't put it through all heck yet to see how it holds up. Great anti-reverse and smoooth drag for an openface.

Thanks for the input, gents. WW, I called last night and they're out, guess I waited too long. I really needed another levelwind, so I ordered an ABU Garcia Black Max, from Fisherman's Factory Outlet. Machined one-piece aluminum frame, 6.3 to 1 gears, and all the bells and whistles. Looks like a sweet little steelhead reel. I wanted one of the Eons, but I ain't waitin' "eons" to get one.

If you're looking for a good reel for the money, pick up a Pflueger Supreme spinning reel and try it. I have a Shimano Symetre and, although a nice reel, when I took it apart to clean it most everything inside is plastic. It does perform well, though. I ordered a Pflueger Supreme a couple of years ago and now have 4 of them. Mostly all metal where they can be and have an excellent drag, anti-reverse, and are extremely smooth. They also come with a spare aluminum spool. Bass Pro carries them.
I'm personally about fed up with Cabela's. Tried to order some crankbaits from them out of their new catalogue and they were out of stock. Asked to backorder them and was told I couldn't because their policy is that only items costing more than $15 dollars could be backordered. Seems to happen a lot with them.
