Can anyone give me a good idea of how to adjust the clutch on this Shimano to help me avoid getting backlash?Yesterday I must have got one on Every cast, and I am used to baitcasters, I finally had to cut one out, gave up and went home.Any hints appreciated.

I would suggest taking it back and getting a abu garcia for the same price.

No I am not kidding but if you really want to keep yours like I did with mine. take off the cover on the non reeling side of the reel and you will see a bunch of little plastic gizmos on litte spindles take a few of these off evenly around the reel. and try that. I still can't get that reel to cast light lead so I've made that reel a plug and plunk reel. works great for that good juck and seriously think about going with a higher quality shimano ie calcutta or any model Abu 5500 or 6500 that will hold what you want for line.

Hope that helps
Rick

Is the Corsair a new one or an old one??? If it's all silver it's the old one and is a total piece of s***, if so Shimano will take it back and replace it with the updated model. The updated version has glod anodized side covers. I had the first version and damn near threw it away several times, the drag system on it sucked to put it mildly. I sent it back to Shimano and they replaced it no questions asked. The new one I have is a much better reel, much improved drag, more adjustment brakes and I feel much more comfortable using it. Depending on where you bought yours I have head that some places (like Sportco here in Fife) will take the Corsair back and credit the cost to another reel. Next one I buy will be an Abu or if I buy another Shimano a Curado.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Correction, Jeffhead: IF it's a Corsair, period, it's a piece of hankey poo. I ended up taking my CS400 (gold one) back to KMart for a 5500 abu, with absolutely zero complaints. I ordered it off the internet from some tackle company, but I told Kmart that it was a Christmas gift and it blew goats, so they exchanged it no questions asked. This was after the reel was over a year old. Now I know why I save those boxes http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I got three of them and use them all for plug rods or salmon rods because they cast terrible. If your gonna cast with them I'd suggest gettin a new reel because everyone I know that has one has the same complaint.

I finally got mine to cast spoons OK, but still can't cast light drift gear without overruns. I had to take it apart, and pull all of the plastic brake gizmos out to the last slot. The biggest complaint I have, is the anti-reverse bearing sticks. Sometimes it comes "unstuck" and causes the reel to freespool, usually at the worst possible time. Cost me a big chum when it freespooled on the hookset (ouch) and nested. I took it apart and cleaned the roller clutch bearing with carb cleaner to get all the grease out of it, and it still sticks. Mine was a gift, and I do still have the box. I'll probably take Ya'll's advice and head to K-mart.

Gentlemen(wait, who am I kidding? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif ), I spoke with the Shimano rep. at the Puyallup sportsman's show for a while. He said that he hasn't heard of any complaints. Yeah right. He was showing off the CS400, like the one I bought, to this guy interested in buying several of them. I told the potential customer of my horror stories with the backlash problem, then the popping noise it would make from time to time while retrieving. This was brand-new out of the box. Also, threw in a ton more people with problems with Corsairs. Needless to say, the rep didn't like it too much, but he wasn't going to say anything to me about it because I would have B!tch-slapped his candy-@ss. That's how I feel about Shimano right now.

Try the Ambassadeur Morrum, they are made for the Japenese market. My wife has a Mag sx 3600. Really nice. Better than my Calcutta by far. Will cast really light without the thumb action to stop it. She won't let me get near it after I got her set up casting for steelhead. I've seen a few on ebay, Cabelas has some without magnetics, but the mag is the way to go.

You can get the Morrum at www.abugarcia.com (http://www.abugarcia.com) as well. I think it has the magnetics. Nice looking reel and probably will get one before fall chinook season.
