RT,

I am calling you on that action shot. It looks quite similar to the Kitimat. That is one hell of a steak. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have about 150 steely photos on my homepage listed below. Most are boots http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif but there are a few chromers.

Right you are CP. I knew somebody would at least see that the 2nd pic wasn't near the lower Kenai River. But I'm impressed you got which river is was; the Kitmat R. of NW B.C. I used it because of the red shirt tie in with the Kenai fish pic http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif . The other 3 are Kenai pics, but the second one is the big deep right angled hole a couple miles or so below the old cable crossing driftboat put-in (I heard that rough launch isn't available anymore). That hole was so full of big Kings that we were hooking them on about every 3rd cast. I remember with one of them I was just starting to let out my simulated rubber eggs and Spin Glo combo and a big fish hit it just under the surface (in a 15 to 20 ft. deep hole!) - landing a 35ish pound aggresive hen. Must have made her boyfriend mad because I caught a high 50's pound buck a few minutes later. Did you or Billy get down there in the late 80's? I was very lucky to hit it for a peak week of the best fishing I've ever experienced. They had a record run of 40,000+ big Kings that year in '89. There were reports of some caught in the mid-70 pound range and I got a 70 (click on Who is RT at top of BB page; it's the 4th pic down ... or try http://www.ifish.net/Steve/whoisrt.html ). A great river that has been compromised by increasing fishing pressure thru the 90's as word spread about it, and it has road access. It wasn't crowded up river in the boating runs when we went, which I found to be really suprising! Lack of boat crowds is why I liked it a lot better than the Kenai. Lots a bank angling in the very lower end though and the road is near the upper river too, but not near those nice boating sections in between. - RT

CP, here is a little better perspective of that salmon steak (cam flash caused the glare):

RT,

I have fished the Kitimat enough to know the sight of all the dead trees on the hillsides. Alcan, Methanex, and Eurocan Pulp sure did a number on the hillsides in those days. It looks like you are fishing the area just above the town bridge. I fish that stretch for springs which is why I recognized it. You should give it a try again. I would like to see how well you do these days with 10 more years of knowledge under your belt. You didn't seem to have much trouble getting into fish on the lava. If you can make it up in mid July I would love to spend some time chasing that world record. RT you must remember I am still a youngster who is still learning the ways. Damn that steak looks delicious and I ate spring 4 times a week from May to Sept. Good thing about fish is you can eat as much as you want and never get obese. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thins the blood out too.

You got a good eye for landscape Jay. Sure enough, that great hole is up a ways from the bridge. That year was incredible! Going south out of Terrace we first laid eyes on that beautiful river at the 18 mile bridge. We got out and - as they say "this ain't no sheeit!" - walk out over the river and looked right down onto a school of dozens of big bronzed Kings swimming up river in shallower water! How's that for timing. Of course with 40K in there ups the odds of that a bit. Clearish water up there and then gorgeous glacial teal with good visability in the lower river. Unlike some of the big northern rivers, this one has some classic pool and drop type water in places. Just a neat river! Too bad the runs have gone down hill ... still many times bigger than Tillamook these days http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif . As for that world record, it isn't likely to be on the Kit. It likely would come from 3 places; where it currently stands at 97+ lbs., the Kenai R. AK, the wilderness Kilbella R. that flows into rivers inlet (where commercial netters have caught them up to 126 lbs., or -da da da dat da da - right near you guys in the Kalum R.! In May/early June and the 2nd run in August, Kings over 100 lbs. go up the Kalum. It's a faster gradient river than the Kenai, with bigger rapids, so landing the record would be more than tough!!! Maybe using 80 lb. superbraid mainline and Maxima 80 lb. leader (maybe even shark fishing thin cable :eek http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif and extra strong 7/o hooks might do the trick - with some luck! Keep in touch. I would love to come up and fish with you and Billy big time in some July (especially the soonest July; but I figure since I came up that way last summer my wife will have other ideas - we'll see). Later Jay. - Steve

This isn't a very good picture, but is a good example of those little Tillamook fish you can catch under a bobber. This is also my first attempt to post a picture, so I hope it works.

WMB,
Either you are about 4 ft tall or that is a huge nook! Did you get a weight on it? For perspective, how tall are you?

Kwiky, to be honest I never did weigh that fish, and now I regret it, but it was definitely a monster! It was the classic bobber takedown - it twitched a little bit, and slowly disappeared straight down.

I'm 5'8", and caught it in the Trask tidewater mid September a couple years ago.

I dunno Kwiky, all I ever see from you is pics of fish, but you're never in any of them. How does that work? Those sure were nice fish though. Look like they came right out of the supermarket freezer. Or did you get some bankie to let you have a photo op with his fish? KIDDING! You know me, I don't get any fish this weekend, I have to take it out on someone.
