I would like to get help with opinions about the best value in a quality but non-expensive digital camera; one I'm comfortable having hanging around out in the boat or in my vest for a little bank jig fishing. That would mean more like in the $150 to $200 range (I've seen those in the 'Camera World ads), rather that the ones over $500 dollars. Where's the best deals at? Local dealers or the net? Thanks much. - Steve

The net is usually the best deal, but Staples will match the internet price. Digital cameras and water don't mix very well and they will!! Buy a nicer camera and keep it in a dry box in the boat. Then get one of the water proof disposable cameras and put that in a ziploc bag for your bank treks. You will save lots of $$ in batteries and your camera is disposable. Then just have your pics put on a cd when they get developed.

The critical factor is megapixels. That translates into how clear the picture will be. There are a lot of "cheap" 1.3 megapixel cameras which will give you grainy, out of focus pictures. Look for something with at least 2.0 megapixels. It might be difficult to find in your price range. Go shopping at Camera World during the day to speak with informed sales people ... but do you buying elsewhere if you can find a better price.

I'm with Pete. You will be very unhappy with the picture quality of anything under 2 Megapixel. I have not seen or heard of any that are waterproof, but you might be able to make your own skin for one that should help.

I think as far as digital cameras go, the ultimate best are the Sony Mavica cameras. They are great to use (i'm using one now to update our website) all you do is transfer the floppy disc into your computer, and you've got your pictures. I want one of my own!!! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif However! I know they don't come cheap! a freind bought this one for $200, but they range around $500 - 1000.. Have you tried E-Bay, or one of the auction sites? Other than that, I would agree with using an ordinary camera, and getting the images transfered to CD.. good idea.

I had been looking at Pricewatch.com. They give you prices and all the models you can think of. And they are all different stores that puts out the best price. Lots of Reading coming your way. I liked the Olympus 360 and 460 For about $300 to $325 range, But I'm still waiting for the prices to come down. You start with the investment with the camera and you can add at least half more for accesories like Battery chargers, Memory cards, Card readers and so on. It still seems like a nice TOY to have.
Good luck. Andy

RT: I bought a Sony Mavica last Oct. just before hunting season to carry in my fanny pack because it was the last year for both my sons to be together & hunting/fishing, etc. It is a MVC-FD73 for $428.00 from olympia digital.com . It was the best buy I could find....I don't know as much as some of the members about the particulars, but a friend had just pruchased one and it took great pics outside! I have soooooooo pleased with it and it is very easy to use and you will take more pics, cause they con't cost anymore and can be deleted in a second. Anyway....if you can afford it, do it now as you won't believe how much it gets used and how many memories you can save very inexpensively this way.....my opinion/experience. ps...i can e-mail you one of hte pics taken last nov. so you canjudge the quality yourself. maybe someone else out there knows the pixels for this model??
RT,
Check out this site www.dcresource.com (http://www.dcresource.com) you should be able to get all you questions answered there. Kodak make a "weather" resistant camera the dc 5000. IMHO stay away from anything that is not SM or CF storage. Hope this helps. Re the resolution how will these be used? web or print? also watch for price reductions soon as the new models are coming.

We discussed a digital camera at Christmas time, but decided to stay with our top of line Kodak advantix w/6power zoom, and just purchased a quality HP 42 bit scanner,
a friend who built my puter said, you can't match the quality of a scanner compared to a dig.camera, this way I just buy the waterproof disposable and scan the pics...my.02....Os

Osprey,
You can get pretty close to the quality of 35mm with a 3.3mega pixel. A good 2.1 something like a cp950 will come close to 35mm up to about 8x10. These are the prosumer type cameras. for the price I like the water proof disposables and rt will not get one of these for less than $500

Check out the March 2001 issue of PC World. On page 193 they rate the best digital cameras under $500, the best being the Olympus D-360L for $289. Sony Mavica is kind of a dinosaur using the limited storage space of the floppy disk. The media cards are the way to go. You can get them as large as you can afford. I have the Nikon 950 and a 64meg card that records over 60 hi res photos.

A link to an Olympus D-460Z
Decent Camera, I have one. Not the top of the line but very functional. Rechargable AA bateries, smart media card, plugs into back of PC for downloading pictures.
OK, web site says batteries are not rechargable, but I bought some rechargable ones, and they work like a champ.
Good luck

I have an olympus 360 and it works great for what I need it for. under 300 and takes a decent pic. has 5 quality levels, which is actually a size difference, one of which is a 3.5 mb tiff file. Here's the link to my picture trail albums: http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?username=ayefsh
all these photos were taken with this camera. You need to consider what you're going to be using the camera for. If you are primarily going to be posting jpegs on the web you don't need super high resolution 'cuz peoples monitors aren't that great usually. Check out hylas.com, eveything you ever wanted to know about digital imagimg. the zoom thing might be kind of cool, but adds to the cost of course. Also the smart media is really cool compared to cameras that use floppies. You can get a smart media card (a 32mb) at costco for $55, that's large enough to hold 75 high quality photos. Word of warning! You will need to look into getting a cd burner to dump your photos onto when your hard drive fills up!
good luck!

Garett, I tried several different combos to frame your URL and couldn't get your pic to come up either. Remember to re-check your 'case sensative' URL again. And always put it between this ....and.... that, with no spaces; except when the message box puts the first one up above the rest of the URL, in which case it will work OK. - RT
