OK, its time to get ready for those smelt! I went springer fishing on Sat. on the lower Columbia. While I was out in the boat all day, I saw sea lions, seals and sea gulls diving in the water and coming up with smelt in their mouth. In one spot alone I saw 30 to 40 seals/sealions.
The smelt gillneters go in the water on Wed. So that should tell the story on how many smelt have entered the lower river.
Fergus-McBarendse seafood in Astoria 503-325-9592 should have some on thurs. if the netters did any good.......Bobber Down

NorthriverB, I'm still eating that same balony sandwich that I took with me, dang it. In other words nada on the fish. But thats OK, it was a beautiful day watching all the ships head up river.
By the way there are still alot of sea gulls diving in the water, especialy near shore when its ebbing. One ol' gillnetter told me that they were small sardines, and I had another netter tell me they were smelt. Thurs. the truth will come out when the gillnetters hit the water. I'll keep ya posted!...........Bobber Down
