I was reading your post and my wife walked up and looked at your name and she said "What's a backlash". So I took my Abu Garcia Ultra Mag XL off the shelf, spun the backlash magnets completely off, and gave the line a little tug. I looked at my wife and said "That's a backlash and that guy is the king of it". I started looking at my reel and realized I had just created one of the worst backlashes I have ever seen. I am dictating this to my wife and I am still cutting the backlash out of my reel. King of Backlash, I must be the crown prince.

jet~~~ Bless your heart. What a wonderful person you must be to show your wife one of the worst things that could possibly happen to a fisherman. Yes it is true that is what causes a backlash. Actually the nickname came from my abilities to undo almost any backlash. Of course this was only after committing quite a few of them. Ask any of the guys who learned to cast the sturgeon gear in the days before the 50H.
If it's a crowned prince you want to be, you must first learn to undo the backlash with out cutting. If we ever meet and the opportunity comes up I'll gladly show you what I have learned about the undoing of the backlash.

Hey man, we have something in common. Yep, I'm the guy that ends up getting backlashes out of everybodies reels when I take them fishing. I think I have had to cut 1 out of the last couple hundred. I used to bank fish for sturgeon with a Daiwa 250H and got real good at undoing nasty backlashes. I am even an expert at unbacklashing Tough Line. Do you use your fingers or are you one of those guys that has to use a crochet needle?

Tanner:

Just got my first level wind. You dont have to fish with a freak any more(drifting w/spinning reel). Glad to know about your back lash talent.

I used the Curado all day Saturday with different weight, only one back lash and it came out pretty easy. Ill be proficient by the time we get together again.

Tanner,
Brother kingofbacklash, it's good to know that this fine art of helping fellow fisherman is still alive and well. So they can keep doing what they really love to do, that's fish. Hard to do when you have that nester type of look on your face. We've all been there right?
The secert to my success is a small swiss army knife, I use the nail file. In the past it would be fingers, or anything I could use. I find the small knife's serviceability to be best for me. It's small enough that I can pocket it all the time. Plus I like the other tools, toothpick, scissors, knife blade, and tweezers( ? ).
Tough line you have to love it, after every big fish played it's staighten it out, or else.

oh oh oh OH OH not another backlash.. I used to fish with a pen 309 with a floppy spool, from the bank with the worst piece of garbage 9'5" fiberglas rod you ever saw. Most of the eyes were barely holding on besides being mismatched... Well I guess we fish what we have/can afford. As you can see by my gear, backlash was the name of the game it was only until I learned how to remove them that I learned how to not create them while casting..

We all have to evolve through the hard times. I can only remember one that I had to cut out but I think we have all had that feeling of helplesness that occurs right at that moment when we decide that the fastest way out of the jam is to cut the darn line.. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif May it not occur often..

Oh ya I remembered one more thing about that reel (which I still have) The line used to get cought between the spool and the housing ever try to get that out without damaging your line ??? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif nice trick

KOB,
I am a toothpick fan sometimes, but I can get most of them out with just my fingers.
I actually knew a guy that carried a shortened crochet hook in his vest for getting backlashes out.
See Ya

I usually can get them clear without cutting as long as the fish are not on the bite at that same moment! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

KOB, I met a gentleman on the river once with the same reputation. He cleared a nasty BL out of my reel just as I was resorting to the method of least resistance. I was very surprised that he was willing to take a brief time out to help. Glad to see that there are others just as kind!

Hey Tanner, I like that crochet needle idea gonna have to get one of those for the tackle bag http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif.
