Tanner,

I've hit the surf w/my fly rod. No luck. The water was really pounding, and I took a good dunking too. I'd love to go back down there on a calmer day and fish em. Let me know when you're going. Maybe we can brain-storm on some Ideas as far as locations and techs.

Surfperch are good eating and fun to catch. I've never used flies but have tried all kinds of bait: clamnecks, muscles, fishgut, shrimp, ect. Shrimp seems to work best and the smaller the better. Use a hook sized to your shrimp and I like the egg sinkers. What you want to fish is the indentations in the beach. If you don't know the beach well its nice to be there at low tide and look for the washouts where there will be some gravel and upon high tide it will serve as a pocket for the perch to feed in. The best fishing is the last three hours of incoming and high slack. Cape lookout, and Manzanita beach have been producing limits. Don't let the tide trap you and ... Good luck!
