We got 2nd place in the little boat that could and did!!
1st place was a big fattie at 57-3/4" and 1/3 more girth than ours.
One 57 1/2"+ fish right at first light missed 1st place by a 1/4" and took a solid 2nd. One 47" fish hours later and lots of dinks in between. The bite went crazy at the last and the action was fast and furious right when we had to leave for the weigh in. It was really hard to leave with several double hookups of keepers in our boat and the boat next to us.
It is really nice to know some nice fish evaded the nets. Thanks Chris, you lucky S.O.B. !!!! ( well OK, some skill was evident ).

Skill??? I think not RW E-mailed me some luck http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
What a great day on the river thank you John for giveing me the opportunity to fish with the best...(and your pretty good too-- http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)
Hats off to John for staying up way to late and still makeing it to the river at 0 http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gifARK:30 Thank God for the GPS it was foggy... But well worth it
We must have lost at least 3 other fish bigger than that one later in the day.. I just keep thinking of what might have been...
HEHE I am rocking back and forth still..
Anyway one thing that John forgot to mention is that the 3rd place winner was about 10 or so (Tyler) I think was his name?? Dogfishboy?? It is great to see young men being taught by their fathers; that is what it is all about right there...
Recap of my favorite moment while fishing:
Phunybones calls John on the cell and they are talking. John gets bit and hands the phone off ot me. So here I am talking to phunny and I get bit.. John is still busy with his bite.. Maybee these fish like cell phones or maybee we should have just had Phunny in the boat with us but you should have seen the hallarity that occured when we tried to figure out how to be pollite (sp?) on the phone and fish at the same time... What a hoot..
I hear there is a derby for fishermans soon ??? hmm should I dare??

What derby was this? And if you guys are that good at sturgeon fishing, stay away from the fishermans derby!
4u2fish, sheeeeesh, I wasn't sure my lucky e-mail would make it in time! Glad to hear it did. You know what they say, "nothing is ever free"? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif RW http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

4u2fish,
Great day had by all. Glad to see Ifishers Chris and Pilar at the St. Helens derby. There might have been some lurkers out there too. Heavy fog all the way for our multiple mile run to the hole. Couldn't see the shore on either side all the way. GPS saves the day once again.
Some VERY nice fish at this years derby - more poundage than last year. Maybe what the F&W guy said at the meeting on Wednesday night regarding a steady increase in the sturgeon count over the last 2 or 3 years might be true.
Congrats to Mike, you Chirs, and 6 year old Tyler. (Took some pic's and hope to have them up soon but need to download them at work on monday... PC camera with Mac at home.) Last year Tyler won 5th place which was lunch at a tavern. This year he won something he can use.
This year we tried to keep the event a little smaller and were very happy with the turnout. We sold 172 tickets vs 250 last year. Next year we are going to wait until the first of March so THOSE DAMN NETS are out of the water. Speaking of nets... ODFW people on Wednesday said there could very well be some gear restrictions on THOSE DAMN NETS next year... tooth instead of gill nets. Ok, need to get off the net topic before I can't control myself. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Thanks to everyone for a great day on the water and making it a fun event. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
David.
BTW, our best was a 471/2 " which won second place last year, so we had high hopes until we got back to the marina and saw the tonnage layed out on the dock. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif But it's not about the size as much as its about just fishin' with friends. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

4u2fish,
I thought the same thing when I uploaded the pics. That fish was one beefy http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gifmonster.
I can't help but smile everytime I look at Tyler trying to hold up his fish. He was a real sport.
Thanks Chris, David.

Thanks for all the hard work dogfishboy. The pics look good. The only thing I noticed was that they just don't do justice to the size of the 1st place fish... In the photo it looks close but on the dock that fish made mine look anorexic. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
