I have a nearly new Yami 115 and the last 2 times out the water won't spit out the side on start-up. The outside temp was between 15 and 22 degrees both times. My T8 kicker started up and flowed fine both times. Later in the day the 115 flowed fine after it thawed out. I always lower the motors and dry start them to flush out any water before parking it. Could the intake be freezing as soon as it sucks the water in? Never had this happen on other outboards.
Anyone else experience this on a Yami 115?

Sounds like dry starting is your problem. Your intake impellor is probably damaged and in need of replacement.

I have a 2001 yamaha 115 and have the same problem when the temps drop. I just figured there is a low spot somewhere where the water sits and freezes inside the motor.

Thanks for the respones, I spoke to my mechanic and he said to stop dry starting and that I had possibly already damaged the pump. As far as the intake being frozen he suggested running compressed air in the outflow to clear it and said its ok to run it without water being discharged as long as I don't hear any alarms.

The compressed air is a novel idea but do not run you motor without water squirting out of it !!! you'll end up overheating the top end doing that you need cooling water flow around your pistons ... Your mechanic would love to sell you a new motor after you burn yours up :smash: :smash: :hoboy:P.S. 4 bolts and your lower unit drops off and its not that hard to change a Impeller one bolt is under your trimming zinc.

I seem to have fixed the problem. I injected rv antifreeze in the out-flow nozzle and it worked fine this morning. 29 degrees with a wind chill.
My intake impellers seem to be fine. I'm glad I figured this out because I fish all winter in central Oregon and not being able to run my new $30,000 boat would be very unhandy.

Hey Fish-on-bend,

What did you use to inject the anti freeze into the out flow nozzle and how much did it take? Did it drain out when full?

Thanks!

I used a large syringe leftover from my fish taxidermy days. I injected about 4-6oz till it spilled out the bottom. Gotta keep the base of the needle tight against the outflow nozzle so it goes in.

Thanks! Great idea, I'll give it a try.

Today was the 3rd try with my solution, 29 degrees and it still works great. Talked to a guy at the dock today who had a Yami 75 and said he had the same problem and put his boat on blocks to get an extreme angle for draining and still had occasional problems. He wanted to see my syringe.
