View Full Version : Are there any slim flyboxes?

I cant seem to find a low profile box for my really tiny midges and brassies.
I am looking to have something that would fit in the back pocket of a pair of jeans. Not that it would actually go there but that is what I am looking for.
The flyboxes I find are 3-4 times thicker than they need to be for most of my trout fishing.
I used to have, until recently when the hinge came apart from metal fatigue, a slim aluminum box that was the size of a playing card and 3/8 of an inch thick. Something that thickness but the size of a postcard would be awesome.
Thanks

The only things I could think of are maybe a business card holder, or maybe even a metal cigarette case. Im not sure if you will find foam thin enough to glue in there, but you could alwasy get some magnetic tape and cut it to size, then just throw your flies in there. I have never seen a flybox in the dimensions you are describing though.

Dunno about what you're looking for in particular, but i've stumbled across a few nice boxes when my wife drags me to the craft store. Some of the stuff they sell for storing beads, buttons, etc is the exact same Plano gear you usually see for fishing tackle, but i've seen a few containers from other manufacturers that were different from anything i've ever seen marketed for fishing, yet they worked out just great.

I know for certain that there is a company (or several companies for that matter) out there who make a nifty little "low profile" box for holding hooks. Its called a hook pallete. The small compartments are separated by foam and the back of the box is magnetized to hold the hooks down :) Sounds like something you may want to look into :twocents: Sorry I don't have more info for ya  Happy hunting. --Rosco.

El cheapo here.
Altoid boxes work. Cut foam to fit, glue it in. Nice little box. Just check out the little candy boxes. Eat the candy and voila! fly box. Some folks I know have stacks of them. They paint them different colors. They sort flies for different waters into the mini boxes and are always ready.
I'm not that organized. I've just got more flies in those boxes, can't say its a particular theme.
Good luck. Let us know what you find.

That's great idea that I am going to have to try. Thanks
What a great idea to use the Altoid box. I always thought there must be some good use for those boxes but could never quite figure out what, other that the usual small things.

Hey Tout Girl,
Nice to see someone else using Altoid boxes for flies. I don't use them for flies anymore, because they have a tendency to rust after a while. I do still use them to carry spare toothpicks and corkies for indicators though.
