Had a wonderful day on the Metolius today..On the water at 8:00am..Very cold morning to start off , my guides kept freezing up...Every time I go here I am always amazed at the majestic beauty of it..I stopped at the fly shop at Camp Sherman first thing to get a report but they did not open until 9:00am..So I hit the river trying a Muddler Minnow with a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear dropper and could not get a bite for the first hour..9:00 rolled around so I headed back to the fly shop for some advice since I haven't been here in quite a while and spring creeks are not my specialty..The guy in the shop was more than helpful and gave me some great tips for the area..He recommended small orange Glow Bugs ...Boy was he right..The Red Band trout loved them...Rainbows and Mountain White fish took a few nibbles as well..

I went 7 for 9 for the day and all the fish were fat boys..Those Red Band Trout are one of the most beautiful fish around IMHO..I was using my 7'3" Sage Graphite III 4wt and they were a blast to fight on it..My little Battenkill 3/4 was singing like crazy..I had to chase down a couple...All fish but one took the Glow Bug dropper and one took my Tungsten Head Scud above...

The water is so clear there its deceiving..When it looked like it was 2' deep it was actually 4'...I thought I was going under once but I learned quickly..I saw some bull trout that had to be 30" or better down deep in a tailout but I could not get a fly to them..

All in all one memorable day of fly fishing.. Here are a bunch of pics of the day...Hey 3riversBob , I know some good spots to try when we go in January...

Mokai, great pics and report.

I miss the Met and haven't been there all year.

My wife and I just bought a time share at Eagle Crest. Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to fish it next Summer.

Is that a corn kernal in that poor fish's mouth?
Jes' kiddin'
& to Ryan: better check the water levels on the Crooked before you head out... last check it was around 38 cfs.... usually good fishing is over 160 cfs to around 225 (or so) cfs.

Way to go Andrew! I loved fishing the Metolius back when my family used to go visit our vacation house in bend more often. That would of been a hell of a fight if you hooked a huge bull trout on that little 4wt sage!

oh, that looks like the famous cheeto fly. After years of training by tossing cheetos over the bridge at the store, I was just about ready to start fishing that fly!

Good spots you're fishin. Looks like you pulled in some nice fish. congrats. its starting to get good over there. yippee!

A few years ago I watched some people throwing Cheetos off the bridge at Camp Sherman..I could not believe the size of the trout that were coming up and eating those..Huge fish..Those are probably the only trout that have a cholesterol problem..
