I drifted the lower main Nehalem from beaver slide to Roy Creek with Pete Morris today (Fri.), from about 8 am to 1:30, and all we got is some quick hard yanks on Pete's sandshrimp but no hookups; likely cutts we figured. I then fished some good holes on the Necanicum by myself for about 2+ hours on the way home and didn't get a bite http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif . We were hoping for some early nates in there; I don't think the South (big) Nehalem is planted anymore? - RT

The South Fork hasn't been planted for several years and the North Fork might as well have not been planted for all the fish that have shown up. I am starting to become a convert to what Preacher Pilar has been pontificating and am ready to supplicate to the Church of the Bent Rod.

Same for most of the region's hatcheries Ollie. An unfortunate mystery indeed! Tha manager of the Big Creek hatchery was interviewed on one of the local TV news stations recently. He said that they had something like only 40 fish. Did I recall that correctly. Very small return in any case. And he said they don't have the answer as to why the terrible run this winter. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif Oh well, winter nates and springers are on the way soon. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey R.T. The count's on the N.F. Alsea suck too. Last weekend the count was only four hundred + fish and the trap's that were holding those fish were empty? The hatchery must have spawned those fish and put them in some pond or lake somewhere. What are your'e feeling's on doing that to a fish ? Personally I don't think they belong in some pond do you ? Steelhead need to return to the river don't they? don't they deserve the chance to complete their life cycle by returning to the ocean. I'm not some enviromentalist but doing that to a steelhead just does'nt seem appropriate to me . Just my opinion. SEE YA MIKIE. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ya know, I'm not sure Mikie and Steve if they live spawn hatchery steelhead or not. They must in some hatcheries, because they are putting some adults in north coast lakes; and they need all the eggs and milt they can get this year. While it's nice to provide an opportunity to catch these fish out of lakes I do think it's proper to let them go back to sea to give them a chance to make it back again. However, with the seal/sea lion populations so high again these weakened 'go backs' much more often wind up as seal dinner. - RT

I don't believe Oregon live spawns Steelhead.
