So many great rods out there, my personal favorite is a GLX 9'6", 7 wt. Casts like a dream, great for steelhead, big rainbows and all salmon except kings. I have a few of them "Princess" and "Titaniums" So Loomis is my favorite brand.

Hello to all from a former Oregonian that returned home to SC after 18 wonderful years in the Banks/Buxton area. Man, do I miss the Salmon and Steelhead. As for favorite rods, it depends on the water. Tiny creeks I love my Orvis superfine 6' 1 oz. 2wt. Med. size creeks, my T3 7.5' 4wt. Most rivers I use my 9' T3 5wt. Steelies or striped bass bring out the 10' Loomis 8wt. I generally prefer mid flex rods, thus I stay away from Sage. I have cast a Scott S3 9' 5wt which is a tip flex, and would definantly like one for the Madison or any windy rivers. That sucker will flat fire a line out there.

My favortie brand rods are G. Loomis: quality and convenient customer service.

However, I seem to use my Lamiglas G1000 series rods the most for both steelhead and salmon. They're my dependable, everyday rods:

6wt Sage TCR with a Skagit Head on it.

More than one false cast and you are doing something wrong.

My favorite is my sage 4wt that I wrapped when I was maybe 10 and still own. I don't know the model but I remember one day in Utah on the creek that drains Otter Creek Reservoir some guy I never had met offering me $300.00 for it and that was over 25 years ago. I believe I just laughed and said no thank you.

I have a Sage Graphite III 4 wt 7'3" that was purchased in the early 90's that is my favorite..Its not the most powerful rod but it has a nice soft action and is deadly accurate...I brought in a nice Steely with it once , that was fun...

I like scott rods. both in spey and single handers. They all for the most part are pretty stiff at the butt and if you match a good line to one it has more power than any other rod i've used.

Scott G seies 5 to 8 wt and Sage RPL 7wt for single handed rods. Sage 8126 and Scott 1308 for spey.

My favorite rod is a custom rod built on a cheap forecast blank. its a 904 and it casts like a dream, a little heavy but a great medium/slow action thats lots of fun to dry fly fish. My favorite production rod that i own is a TFO TiCrX 9' 6wt. great lake rod

I'd have to say that for the majority of fishing I do (trout) from small coastal streams to the Deschutes, I love my old Hardy glass rod. It's a little 7' er and casts a 5 wt like a dream...in fact it's so nice and smooth and slow that one can daydream during the backcast. It's got enough backbone to handle any trout, from a 19"+ Deschutes redband to a 17" SRC to a 6" native cutt to an 8" brookie. Wind? no problem...oh, did I mention that it casts like a dream?

~Randy

oh, on the off-chance I might decide to fish nymphs, I prefer my old Cortland CL 9'...again, nice and slow action and can throw those monster stone rigs with the best of them...

I do have a nice Scott 5wt that is a straight up cannon, but it just doesn't have the same feel as that Hardy or even the Cortland.

My favorite brand used to be G Lommis. It is hard to beat a GLX. I liked their cutting edge science in rod design and their basic mat finishes. But as you know, they were bought out a few years back, and now it appears they are after a different market of fisherman. Still good rods.

I also really like the action of my Sage XP. Too bad they are stopping production on them.

My favorite trout rod is my Scott 509/2 ... it's from the old days before they moved to Colorado and it's inscribed to me from the factory. It's a great Deschutes rod, with good backbone, but sensitive enough tip to protect a 5x or 6x tippet. For small creeks, i like my Orvis Henry's Fork, since it handles and casts like cane - very soft and will fish down to a 7x or 8x tippet. For steelhead, my Scott 809/4 is a dream. It has power and strength. Scott also inscribed it to me ... I really liked that the rod technician called and talked to me about how to configure the power in the rod before he wrapped the graphite on the mandrill ... that was customer service I don't know if exists anywhere anymore.

Fly Logic Optimum Series. These rods are built very well and fish even better. I love the feel and action of the rod. I have a FLO 905/3. Although they are a reletively new company they seem to have their act together. Great look, feel and a lifetime warranty.

Sage rods. SLT for dry line steelhead and atlantic salmon in a 7 or 8 wt and the 376 for trout. good backbone but without sacrificing sensitivity throughout the entire rod.
Xi2 6wt for steelhead and beach fishing. Load it with an Outbound and you can cast a mile.

You guys that spend a fortune on a rod make me laugh. Quality is quality, put you can put a TFO or WW Griggs to work just as well. You new guys do not let the high rollers scare you away.

For general trout I will always fish my old 5wt Redington RS2. Soft and great for dries. Sage DS2 6wt or streamers and TFO Ticr 6wt for single handed summer steel and bull action. My 8wt Prof double handed TFO has been put to work as well. If I would have saved the money I spent on all four of those rods then I could have bought that Burkheimer or B2X that I always wanted. But then again I would have missed out...........

FYI, Laminglass is having a sale at their factory outlet this saturday.

Nymph for steelhead...10 foot Scott S3 6 weight.

Steelie Mike,
I used to think that spending a wad on high end rods was a luxury for someone else. I fished rods priced at under $100.00 for years, and even a few in the mid price range bracket. They worked fine, and I caught a lot of fish. But then I tried one of those high end rods set up with a silky smooth reel. It was like a breath of fresh air. What a difference it can make.

The price of the high end rods shouln't scare the young fishers. You are right that there are several less expensive rods out there that can do the job just fine. I am normally not one to spend a lot of cash on non essentials.

Now that I am older, I remember what my brother told me. "Do it before you can't do it". So these days I live with a little luxury on the river.

The best fly rod I have ever owned (and there have been many) was an 8' 5wt rod by Fenwick. It was in the very early days of graphite. Whether by accident or by design, it turned out to be the sweetest casting rod I've ever owned. I just loved it. It served me well for many years then I broke it about a foot from the top. I repaired it by epoxying a small diameter section of another rod inside the hollow blank. I wrapped it and it continued to serve well for another 8-9 years. It finally broke. I still have it in my rod rack just for old times sake. I've since moved on to longer rods for most of my fishing, but I sure like that dainty little 5 wt.
