I checked out (from the library) a few flycasting videos by Mike & Denise Maxwell. (number one is still on hold but I have video 2-4). I watched part of video #2 and the ladie casting was doing this "bounce" (I guess you would call it) in her knees and hips when she was casting forward and backward. Is this just "her style" of casting or s this essential for proper flycasting?

It's her style. Get the Joan Wulff DVD. It's far and above the finest instruction video out there.

My husband asked me to answer this question (being a woman and all...). The bio-mechanics of women differ somewhat from that of men. Given the difference in body structure women have certain 'chest' features and hip girth to compensate for. Where as men (unless overweight or out-of-shape) have a different structure and of course more muscle mass (= strength) the women uses the her hips and shoulders to throw more of her weight (rather than muscle) into the cast. Ever watch a woman bowling? Or throwing discus? The other thing that is imperative is that they look attractive to the other flyfishers. As you know more men flyfish than women and what 'could be' a difficult time to draw attention to oneself is now made easier with use of the hips and shoulders thrown about.

OK, once again, I suggest you contact your local fly shop, local fly fishing club (Federation of Fly Fishers as a good example) take a class, have some one with experience instruct/critique your cast....
YOU WILL RUN INTO PROBLEMS LATER ON BY TRYING TO DO THIS ALONE.
I taught beginning classes in Portland for years. The most difficult obstacle to over come is to UNTRAIN bad habits. Why waste time & energy learning to do things incorrectly (or at a minimum poorly) when you could learn to cast well the first time around?
Are you that far removed from a shop or a school or another fly fisher? your profile doesn't indicate where you live (that point has been mentioned before).
You will NOT learn to cast via the internet. You MAY pick up some good pointers from videos (Joan Wulff & Mel Kreiger are quite good) but you won't have anyone there to tell you what you need to correct. you won't be able to watch the video while your learning.... you do have many resources from which to choose.....
don't understand why you wouldn't...
Later.
come out here, I'll give you a lesson FOR FREE!!!
