Winter Run Steelhead Fly Fishing Challenge – 2006/07

This is not an Ifish sponsored event.

Sponsors are AndyK and Frankenfish.

Contest will run from 23 November 2006 to 15 April 2007.

There are two categories for the contest and two prizes:

1. Largest fly caught Winter Run Steelhead posted on Ifish from the Columbia River and all Columbia River tributaries in Oregon and Washington west of the Hood River bridge (open to steelhead fishing) and from Coastal rivers and streams in Oregon; fish must be caught no earlier then 23 November 2006 or later then 15 April 2007. Prize is a RIO or Air Flo Multi-tip fly line in weight selected by the winner.

2. Largest dry fly caught Winter Run Steelhead posted on Ifish caught in the waters open in this competition and during the period in category 1; minimum length is 22 inches. Prize is a Wheatley fly box.

There will also be monthly honors for the largest fish posted by an entrant in that month. Prize to be announced.

Sponsors are eligible to win under categories 1 & 2, but not the monthly competition.

Steelhead must be a winter run fish. Therefore, no steelhead from the Clackamas River in Oregon will be accepted if it was caught before 1 January 2007. Further, no steelhead will be accepted if caught in a “land locked” lake or reservoir.

Fly-fishing consists of two elements: fly casting and the use of a fly. Absence of one of these elements is not fly-fishing. Fly fishing rules are the same as IGFA fly fishing rules with following clarifications and additions:

Any legal fly-fishing method using standard fly fishing rod, line and reel is acceptable except trolling/back trolling.

Spey rods are acceptable.

Use of additional weight on fly leader (i.e. split shot) and indicators is allowed, as long as fisherman is still fly-casting (i.e. the weight of the line must carry the fly rather than the weight of the fly, split shot and/or indicator carrying the line).

Fly must meet the legal definition of a fly in Oregon and Washington. Articulated and tube flies are acceptable.

Two flies (maximum) may be used. That is a main fly and a trailer or dropper (IGFA rules prohibit use of a dropper fly).

Scent and/or scented fly tying materials are not allowed.

Rubber flies or eggs are not allowed. Flies tied with fly tying foam are acceptable.

A jig is not a fly. If the “fly” is tied on a jig hook, it is a jig, not a fly.

Steelhead must be hooked in the mouth (Washington regulations allow hooking a fish anywhere on the head forward of the gills, which is not acceptable in this competition).

All entries must have a photo posted on the Ifish Fly Fishing board within one week of being caught. Exceptions will be made with concurrence of sponsors due to unusual circumstances. Photo will be taken on the river/stream where the fish was caught with the fly gear used displayed in the photo.

Native steelhead should not be removed from the water, unless necessary for a photo. If necessary, removal should be a quick lifting of the fish from the water for photo purposes.

Prizes will awarded for the largest fly caught Winter Run Steelhead posted on Ifish and for the largest Dry fly caught Winter Run Steelhead posted on Ifish. It is possible for one fly fisherman to receive more then one prize.

Dry fly entries are for steelhead where the fly fishermen specifically targeted steelhead with that method. In other words an incidental hookup when using swinging a wet fly that developed too much drag in a fast current subsequently skated across the surface will not count! Either a drag free presentation or skating a fly is acceptable.

Largest steelhead will be determined by length, not weight (since native fish are not to be removed from the water). Length is from the end of the nose to the center of the tail. Measurements will be to the ¼ inch and shall be rounded down.

In the event of a tie, the first entry will be the winner.

Entrants must announce their participation no later then 15 December 2006 by either posting a reply or sending a PM to AndyK. There is no entry fee!

Entries do not need to disclose the location where the steelhead was caught in the post. However, the sponsors must be advised of the location to determine the qualification of the entry. Locations will not be disclosed on the board except for the winning entries when announced.

Entrants will be disqualified from further participation in the contest for the following reasons:

1. Illegal conduct.

2. Unsportsmanlike conduct.

3. Removing a native steelhead entirely from the water other then for a quick photo.

I am caving in to the behind the scenes pressure.

Although I have never caught a steelhead, in a bold move of outrageous confidence, I'm tossing my hat in the ring.

Yikes, now I have to go fish in the rain huh?

Count me in too. I don't usually fish for Winter fish with my fly rod, but there's always March on the Applegate. Does it qualify for the contest? It is a Tributary of the Rogue.

Thanks Andy!

Although I will get some fish, you all obviously don't need to worry about me posting anything on time. LOL.

Reading comprehension is not my strong suit...

"All entries must have a photo posted on the Ifish Fly Fishing board within one week of being caught."

In honor of my incompetence, I will not enter my November fish. :jester:

AndyK
01-04-2007, 02:16 PM
The November/December winner is Twitchs_Tackle with his 30-inch winter steelhead.

While Slow and Low posted a larger steelhead, he graciously conceded that his fish was a summer run fish. Since the competition is for winter run steelhead, Twitchs_Tackle wins with his fish.

AndyK
01-30-2007, 04:03 PM
Slow and Low won the January monthly competition with his 34 inch steelhead.

AndyK
02-18-2007, 10:58 AM
Slow and Low may win the February competition with a 27 inch steelhead unless someone posts a larger fish in the next ten days!

I have caught three steelhead over 27 inches this month, but don't qualify for the monthly competition since I am a sponsor:smash: .

44.4 % Not too good so far. Hopefully I'll do better if the rivers ever drop.

Due to a lack of computer skills my son (rimrock) posts my fish pictures for me. My camera skills are lacking also. The fish really is larger than the image of my thumb. I did have a pretty good day fishing in sleet and rain today on the Sandy. Managed to hook six fish and bring three to the bank all swinging a type 8 15 foot sink tip on my spey. The picture is the only hatchery fish. The other two fish landed were big natives. Quick measurement relative to my wading staff had the hen at 30 inches and the buck at 35-36 inches. I carry a tape measure and taped the hatchery hen at 28 inches.

I really wanted a picture of the buck, but that was impossible fishing alone. I would have had to take off my raincoat and then my vest to get at the camera in a baggy in the back of the vest. That much time would definitely have stressed the fish.

It's amazing the difference in the fight between hatcheries and wild. The hatchery hen gave a couple of jumps but didn't take long to land. Both wild fish just wouldn't quit. Every time they get close to shore they head back out to the middle again. I pressure them hard with my 13.4 foot 9 wt spey and 16lb tippet. They are special fish!

I was on the sandy today and did not see you. Hooked one landed one swinging. 30" native hen. Ultra bright. The weather was nuts.
