Planning 5 days Bogans to Helleras Bar. I see the river is way way up. Anyone have an opinion on how fast this thing will come down?
Maybe Clarno to Cottonwood is a better option on the John Day?

It oughta' come down pretty fast, especially if the colder weather that we normally have marches in on the heels of this warm, wet stuff.
This is a highly unusual event for us over here and my gut feeling is this water will push the fish quite a bit higher than we are used to catching them in November.
As long as there is good visibility I for one will be fishing near or even above the Minam/Wallowa confluence this weekend.
If it looks like the water on the GR won't get below say, 1500cfs by the end of your trip you might consider going Minam down and especially hammer the stuff hard near the GR/Wallowa confluence.
I can't say for sure if the fish will shoot upstream with all this, we just don't get events like this over here. My 20 years+ experience with steelhead tell me to fish it much higher in the system than normal.
So, that's what I'll do. If I don't report back, assume I slaughtered em'........ ;)

Slow and Low,
With this shot of Rain, you can bet the section of river you are thinking of fishing will be loaded with fish.
Call Bill Farrel at Bogans Oasis. (google it for the #)
He will tell you what the visibility looks like, and if people are catching fish.
If there is 12 inches of visibility I'd be willing to bet you'll do fine.
This River comes into shape quicker than any other river around, but it also blows out easier than any too!
Just keep an eye on the weather. If it starts raining real hard, that thing will become chocolate in no time.

So how did you do at Minam/Wallowa confluence last weekend?
My wife and I caught 4 in Troy last Sat.

I hate to admit it but I got blanked, saw two fish on the bank at Minam park at the big hole. I tried the Wallowa up in the canyon to no avail. The water was up in the grass and my waders were in the repair shop so I was in jeans and hunting boots, pretty tough to fish it, the water was not blown out but was moving at a good clip.
If my Dan Bailey's don't make it back by the weekend I'll buy a cheap pair of neoprenes and take my pontoon boat out for a short float.
There just HAS to be a bunch of fish in there, that high water should have pushed them up.
I've heard some good reports from Troy too, it had slowed down a bit but the high water must have drawn those Snake River laggers back into their home country.... ;)

Chainsaw, Jet,
Either one of you guys have pontoon boats? Looks like you're both local. I wouldn't mind having a toon' buddy or two for short floats. I hate doing the self shuttle thing. Drop me a PM sometime.

I sold my Alumaweld drift boat last year, looking for a toon though.
Sounds like a plan.

Last time i went from minam to troy in a raft was last June, we had lots of fun and caught some really nice trout.
When does the bulk of the oregon fish show up? I have fished in Washington and hammer on the oregon fish through december with some later than that. There does seem to be two pretty distinct timings on the fish, washington v. oregon.

The latest fish are the biggest. early fish are smaller. The last couple years we have done 5 day floats late. The higher the fish the smaller and the reverse for the lower.
