View Full Version : Winter Steelie Nymph Swap

clacksteel
11-05-2006, 07:55 PM
Its been a while since our last swap and considering that the winter steelhead season is right around the corner I figured I should get something started. I need 12 tiers. Each will tie 12 winter steelhead nymphing flies (flies that are made for primarily a nymphing technique). I am thinking that the deadline will be in about a month...Here are the guidelines:
1. Attach tags that display the tiers moniker and a recipe (to be attached or posted online)
2. Provide proper packaging to protect your flies and the mailman
3. Include a self-addressed and stamped envelope w/ your flies
4. The flies arrive on or before the deadline.
5. Should 4 be broken, the late tier's flies will be sent back, and, if it is his/her second offense, will be baned from all further swaps
6. A tier must notify the swap leader as soon as they know they cannot participate (should they tell the leader less than one week before the deadline, it will count as the same as a late offense)
7. The swap leader must send out the flies within one week of the deadline

I would like to get in on this but I have never done a swap before so if you can point me to a FAQ or just give me a little heads up on what I need to do that would be great.

I would do either a Black Bart or an Electric Blue Leech.

I've already tied my first dozen and plan on tying another dozen before shipping them out. That will give me some flies to catch a winter fish on Thanksgiving!

Post Office Mission: successful with minutes to spare. The return mailer is included, so you can stuff the return into the mailer and stick on the included label. Let me know if you use or catch anything on the extra.

Also, please forgive the advertisement on the cards.

OK I figured out what happened.... my postage was 17c less than what I had (i guess those gami hooks are heavier than what I usualy use:confused: ) so it got sent back to me.... but thank god it did because the post office guys decided to change the zip code to 97068, because they thought I got it wrong. they said that 97266 is Happy Valley, not Portland.

sooo i chnged the address to "happy valley OR 97266" and I made sure it will be there by tomorrow

sorry for the delay

I'm glad to hear the flies weren't lost! Our zipcode got changed to 97086...we were told we could write our city as: Portland, Clackamas, or Happy Valley (we write it as Happy Valley). Our old zipcode was 97266 and they accepted Happy Valley or Portland.

I still have to send one more because I couldn't go to the post office to buy postage and such...it will be a couple more days before I can get that one out.

PS-It makes it much easier if they are STAMPED envelopes....$$$ is very inconvienient.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it earlier: the 12th fly would be your own pattern returned to you since there are only 11 other patterns in the swap. I usually send the extra set to Jennie for all that she does w/ the site but she claims she doesn't use them...so if it is okay I would like to donate them to my school's fishing club that I started. Either way is totally fine w/ me.

I also got the flies in the mail yesterday. FINALLY. While waiting for the flies, I felt like a kid in the candy store, only I had no money and the owner wouldn't give me any candy. The fly that I tied is called the "Hot-butt Dead egg lifter". It has the orange dumbell eyes, with white chenile, and a secret sauce coming off of the back on the shank.

Mine is something close to what I saw Steeliemike use to catch 3-4 Steelhead right in front of me with. Just a drab golden olive nymph with rubber legs and a bright orange head. It is wrapped with 8 wraps of .30 lead to secure the bead. So Be careful it sinks like a rock!!

Great flies everyone! I'll be trying them out as soon as I make some copies.... speaking of copies, I forgot to post a recepie for my tango egg... here it goes:

First I'd like to say that at the time when I was tying the flies, I did not have one of the components (the sparkle brush is hard to get  ), so the flies you guys got, do not have it. Sorry !!! It goes under the glo bug yarn and adds a little flash to the fly. it is not required though.

Tango egg:

hook: Gamakatsu (size 2 - use a big hook that sticks out !!!)
body: Any cluster of rubber eggs
tail: Polar Chenille
wing: Sparkle brush covered by glo bug yarn
head: Nickel/brass/tungsteen bead (vary size depending on aplication)
http://www.ifish.net/gallery/uploads/2478/materials1.JPG

I couldn't find a glue that works good for the eggs, so i tied them on like you would tie dumbell eyes.

here is one without the sparkle brush:

http://www.ifish.net/gallery/uploads/2478/green_tango.JPG

here is a diferent color combiantion that has sparkle brush (it's pink under white globug yarn)

http://www.ifish.net/gallery/uploads/2478/pink_tango.JPG

those are great for higher water:smash: :smash: :smash:

good luck!

Mine were individually packaged in plastic bags with the recipe and my info stapled to the baggies. They were placed in a large padded envelope with my mailing label in the return address, and a smaller (4 x 6") padded envelope inside with the flies.
