27" bow in davis lake. Lot's of steelhead on the deschutes while trout fishing in October, say 30"??
No longer fish a five weight in October. Takes forever and a day to get them unhooked. Bad for the fish to say the least.

I used to do half pounders on the Klamath with my 4 wt and I caught a lot (prob about 50-60) of adult 5-10lb steelhead with it too while doing so.
I use a 6 wt now just because it is my new rod and the 4 wt didnt like to toss the weighted and bead headed size 6 flies so well if there was any wind.
I caught a lot of sockeye up in Canada on my old 5-6 Kunnan and it did just fine. Just took a couple minutes each but I wasnt fishing in very fast water up in the Quesnel River.
You will hear a lot of opinions on this.
Just dont high stick the rod and back up instead of bending it to the water and you will be fine with Steelhead, Silver, and Sockeye as long as you arent tossing really large flies. The larger flies will kill your nice tight loop and you consequently will not be able to cast very far or very well.

I think that it has to do with the skill of the angler and how tired you want the fish to be at the end...

I caught a juvenile Chinook on the rogue a few weeks ago, maybe 25-27 in., about 5 lbs. It was like pulling in a log with a head shake here and there.

thats all that it boils down to, and some luck. a friend of mine's son, landed a 45 pound king in AK on a 5wt.
just a matter of time and skill.

I watched Tred Barta land a 42 lb chinook on a 3 wt I believe in Alaska. As others have said it all boils down to how long you want to fight the fish and how skilled you are at playing the fish well.:twocents:
