depends on what your fishing for and water coditions. trout and panfish=1-4 bass=6-8 steel and coho=6-12 that should do it.

Are you saying I can use a 12lb leader on a 5wt?

If you want 12 pound will work, and you can break your rod. 5 weights are for trout and mostly pitching dry flies. 4-5x is the right line size.

the way they classify fly leader is how many X.. like 1x, 2x, 3x..
You take the number 11x, and subtract the number off a 5x tippet. That gives the number in thousandths of an inch so your 5x tippet is .006" diameter(six thousandths of an inch).
A 1x is .010"
A 2x is .009"
A 3x is .008"
etc..
I am not exactly sure what size is what in lb test but I know that my 1x Fluoro carbon is 10.4lb test and my 4x is 6.4lb. I can get 4x through the eye of a size 20 hook so I never fish lighter than that.

5wt
you can use whatever you want. The question is what is right for the fish. 12lb is way outside for a 5wt, too big, for the reasons the guys said.
5x or 6x are the most common tapered leader size probably used on the 5wt. If going for bass, maybe 4x. This equates to 2lb - 4lb mono.
You'll need to say a bit about what you're fishing for and where, to get better information. People really do switch out their leaders frequently based on the situation. Its not sizing the leader for the rod, its sizing the rod and the leader for the situation & type of fish.

I was thinking I wanted to fish for SM, trout, shad, and maybe a brooder or two there going to stock next Jan.
The rod I was thinking of getting is a Pflueger purist, 9ft, the tag on the grip says 5/6wt, but the blank says 5#. A couple websites say it is a 5wt and a couple others say it is a 5/6wt. If I got it should I risk putting a 6wt fly line on it? I really want a 6wt, but this rod is so beautiful (Im in love). Im just not sure I should go for it or not. It would be nice to have a rod I could go after carp with.

If there is any way you can you will want to try it with a 5 wt line and a 6 wt line and see which one it throws better.. My old 5/6 threw 5 wt fine but was so slow it couldnt throw the 6wt nearly as well.

You can use any leader you want. I've used 10lb on my 5wt more than a few times for trout, and could cast it as far as was necessary, and caught plenty of fish.
Building on what Slow and Low said though, if you hook into a Steelhead and don't play it well, you do run the risk of breaking your rod.

the traditional response for a 5/6 weight fly rod is a DT 5 weight line or a WF 6 weight line. they will load the rod a little differently from each other.
the end of the fly line get you to the leader then the tippet to the fly...
the tippet size (in "x" measurements) is related to the leader you've chosen... the size of the fly is related to the tippet size. IF you buy this rod (or set up from a shop) they'll explain to you.
All of these choices are dependent on the fish you're after... 10 inch trout or 10 pound trout are different.
Perhaps a book... such as The Curtis Creek Manifesto would do you well.
don't guess... you'll end up with useless stuff.
