A friend and I are really interested in making a trip up North to fly fish for chums. What I'm hoping to find is "somebody in the know" that would like to join us. We are thinking of a weekend trip most likely getting a room somewhere to spend Saturday night. We both work nights so it will be one of those deals where we meet somewhere at o'dark thirty in the morning and take off, fish all day Saturday then go find a room. By then we'll be pretty spent. We both have all the gear necessary for ourselves and may be able to help if our "guide" needs anything. We just don't know the area very well. We are thinking either the Skykomish or the Snohomish but really don't want to go in blind. Any takers?

If you can wait another week or so there will probably be a ton more fish in the rivers.. There are some fresher fish down low in the local rivers but it is really hit or miss. Everything is running late so I would wait til about the 5th to 10th and hope for a couple good rains between now and then.

I was going to fish Hoodsport this week. Any info on the fishery there? I did well there last year at this time, and for several years before that.

Sublety, the offer stands if you'd like to meet us somewhere. The fellow I'm with is a serious fly guy. I'm pretty laid back about it but I tie my own flies and have built my own fly rod so I guess I'm serious too. I'll bring you some pheasant tails if you want...let me know.

Oh so if you are coming up here.. tie up a couple of flies just like chum candy but wrap the hook with fluoro or pale green, then wrap on top of that with 6 or so strands of green crystal flash wound from the butt to the head (leave a 3/8" crystal flash tail out the back to start), and then tie off the crystal flash and bend it back and tie it like a wing going backwards at like a 30 degree angle. Then tie white maribou just on top of the wings so it looks like 10% crystal flash 90% fluffy maribou wing..

Tie it on a strong hook too :)

A black egg sucking leech with a red head and purple hackle works real good too. Beadeye, hour glass head mebbe.. whatever it will work.. I tied everything on the heavy duty black size 6 hooks for chum/winter steelhead pretty much.

I was planning to check out Hoodsport this year with my new boat but it's still not finished. If anybody's interested next year, I might have an open spot on the casting deck.

Guy,

Can't wait for next year!:) The people fishing from boats really have it easy and are successful. That boat might be to pretty for salt water.

I fly fished today on the Snohomish for an hour or so until 4:30 or so when people got done with work and started crowding the waters a bit so I switched to gear fishing then.

I didnt get a bump on the fly rod.

Got 5 in an hour and a half on a slip bobber and jig tipped with a prawn piece.

I'll have to check my waiting list, but I think I can pencil you in Phil  !

Actually, I can't wait either. Sight casting to schools of bright chum sounds like a hoot. And thanks for the comments on the boat. As for saltwater, I think it will prettiest with a good coating of rockfish and hatchery coho slime!
