Well Abu Garcia sent me their last printed newsletter, but it will now be available to all via their website: www.abugarcia.com (http://www.abugarcia.com) So since I was receiving their printed newsletter in the mail, they are giving me 25% off a new real of my choice. I get paid here in the next 6 days, so of course I will be buying fishing related items, and I need a new reel (not really, but why not?). I was looking at getting a 5500 C3, but their 5600 C4W reel looks nice, but I don't know a thing about gear ratios for fishing here in the PacNW for salmon/steelies. Now bass reels I do, of course.

The 5600 C4W has a a gear ratio of 3.8:1
The 5600 C4 has a high-speed ratio of 6.3:1

The 5500 C3 has the same as my 6500C3 5.3:1

Money's not an issue when abu is concerned, and that's what I want to get this time around. Help me out on which one to get. Now one that really caught my eye was the M6600CL and it's ratio is 5.1:1. Does anyone ever fish with those abu MORRUM reels? Reel weight isn't a big deal because I am a strapping young buck. Thanks for all the input.

When I see a picture of that thing, I can't help but hum the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I will take a look at it more in-depth from their website over the next few minutes, but just in the picture I have right here, it looks like "too much" plastic to me. I will tell ya what I decide, but someone help me out on the gear ratios for this anadromous fishing.

hey_yall,

Look at the Morrum, my dad loves his.. he has the 5600.

What's up with that rod order? You busted my butt because I took 6 hrs. getting you a rod quote that you said you were ordering and haven't heard from you? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

25% off the Morrum's retail price should put it at $150 or so... that's a good deal.

I looked at an Eon, but all of the plastic parts scared me away as well. I have two reels that vary dramatically in gear ratio, and I much prefer drift and float fishing with the high ratio one. Throughout the day the high retrieve rate can add several casts to your total, especially if you long line the distance I do http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

See, I was only guessing, not an educated one, just a theory. I don't want a left-handed reel baitcaster. I can work a spinning reel fine that way, but for some reason it's too awkward, plus I don't want to reteach myself how to wind a reel, play with the drag with my left thumb. I appreciate the responses. Is there no one that knows any first-hand knowledge on that EON reel?
As of right now, I will probably snag up a morrum and a C4, but get the C4 or the EON first and hold off on the morrum, but definetly get a morrum before king season or springer season. Make sense? Still wanna hear something about the EON that I didn't read about at their website.

I'd go with the higher gear ratio for salmon/steelhead. Purpose of the lower one is for crankin' the deep diving plugs for bass. Makes it less tiring and also keeps the speed down where the plugs will actually work for you. For the river fishing, only thing you're after is to retrieve your lure after the drift or try to catch up with a "bullet". I'd also stay with a metal reel. The EONs are new, look slick, but so did the Shimano Corsair. I bought one and would really like to have that purchase opportunity again. It's a cheap piece of crap! Stay with the metal reels.

Why is the Morrum more expensive than the 5500 and 6500 series? Just curious, I was looking at them at Forest Bay where they are 159.00.

Don't worry TH, I haven't forgotten about ya. I am just waiting to see what my dad and bro want to do about rods so we can collaborate together. That may be within the next month, or we put it on hold for a couple of months, but don't worry, I'm not going anywhere.
I did some looking at that EON and I have to say it looks cool, and after checking it out on the website, it looks very promising, but I would really hate to spend that kind of money on a reel to have it come up a complete bust like that piece of ***** Shimano Corsair 400 that I purchased several months back. Still though, that MORRUM looks like a beast as well, so I may get two, and just sell my bro my 6500C3.

Still I haven't heard really much on the gear ratios as to the opinions y'all have on the higher vs. lower gear ratio. Bass fishin' I always liked a higher gear ratio because I was a topwater wizard. Seems to me like a lower gear ratio would take alot of fight out of the fish as in wearing him down more. Probably wouldn't be so tough on the drag as well, but I'm just guessing.

Why in the world would you want a slower gear ratio?

Here are the disadvantages that I see;

1. If a hot steelie or nook starts running AT you, you will have to reel like a banshee to get that line tight.

2. Faster gear ratio equals more casts in a day. (i.e. you get your lure in faster on retrieval)

3. With a gear ratio that is nearly half of normal level winds, you would need to be careful to "pump" the rod much more gradually while bringing a fish in. This is to make sure that you keep a tight line while you are reeling twice as much as normal to retrieve line.

Get the 5501 C4

I have two and love them.

Hey_Yall,

sounds good... let me know and I'll put a mulitple rod package deal together http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

GO with the Morrum.... I too see no advantage and lots of disadvantages w/ the slower retrieve reels.

Morrum has more ball bearings, an improved level wind design that supposedly keep line from from digging into the spool. I would bet that the internal parts are a little better. Some of the parts in the C series are plastic and can wear easier.

All that aside though, I would rather buy two reels for the price of one! I have many C3's and just got a C4, no complaints.

Just my $.02 though....

Thanks for all the input fellers, and ladies, if any of y'all responded. I think I am going to go with a C4, and sorry Pilar, not the explosive C4 http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif Well not until it's comes down to more extreme measures. I have a 6500C3 already and I like it alot, except the drag is starting to get a little screwy with me, even though I back it off half-way after I use it. I think it's time for some grease and lube job. On the reel http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif The C3's seem to be very common as I haven't really seen anyone yet with a C4 so I didn't know if it had something to do with the gear ratio or not, so I had to ask the group. Well boys and girls, it's raining so it looks like I am going to the blah blah river as it was "hot" this time last year. Still awfully warm weatherwise though.

Hey Redneck,as far gear ratio goes I beleive you can have too much, stay in the 5:1 range you'll be fine http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
If you're gonna spend the bucks how about a Shimano http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif Calcutta ..Curado.....my .02

Sorry O's, but Shimano is really gonna have to WOW http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif me before I purchase another reel from them again. I bought shimano for years while bass fishing, with minimal problems, but over the years I saw their quality slowly go downhill, but I hear the Calcuttas are nice, but I am still sore about losing money on that ******* Corsair 400.

Don't ya just love run-on sentences?

If your right handed get a left handed crank and visea versa 5501 c3 or c4 for Steelhead and a 6501 c3 or c4 for Chinooks both work great and are easy to get fixed if you can break one!---Fishhead Vic
