:help: Hi everyone! I am super new to this fly fishing for salmon steelhead thing. Im so new infact I have never done it and am dying to try it. I have some really great water picked out that I know I can have a great day catching and releasing fish. I just have no idea how to rig up??? Also i only have a 6wt rod and I know I need an 8-9wt so if any generous person out there feels like trading or has an extra rod laying around for really cheap Let me know. O ya I am not new to fishing just new to the fly side of things. Thank you all for your help!!!:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

RL,
One of my best friends got a fly rod for Christmas about 10 years ago. He had always been a gear fisherman, but he wanted to give it a try. He went out to his local river that afternoon to try casting. He stepped into his favorite run to fish with spinners and dropped the fly into the water. he hooked a fish almost as soon as the fly hit the water. He literally landed his first flyrod steelhead without even making a cast! Took me a year of trying hard to do the same.
I can't help you with the extra rod and such, but just get out on the water and give it a whirl! You'll be a bit undergunned for steelhead with a 6 weight, but not dramatically so. If you use a slightly heavier leader (10#-12#) you can get the fish in fast enough to avoid over tiring it. As far as rigging, head to the local fly shop for a couple of steelhead flies. Get a few bright ones and a few that are darker and more subdued. Get them out in water that you would normally fish a spinner in. If you're not getting deep enough either invest in a sink tip line or add some weight to your leader if it's legal in the river that you are fishing.
Also, which part of the state are you in? It can really help to get out on the water with some other ifishers that have more experience.
Good luck and get out on the water!

Besides an 8,9, or 10 weight, you are also going to want to pick up a sinking line. You will probably want both a Type III and Type IV. You may want to consider a multi-tip line in which you can easily change the tips.
good luck!

Well guys, I went out today for my first fly fishing day. I got to the river at 3pm and fished a while not having a clue what I was doing. I read on the net how to tie my main line to my leader. I put a strike indicator on and a split shot and set out. I ended up landing 4 and lost 3 others (Coho) oh and I also foul hooked one. What a blast I'm hooked and as for the 6wt It was almost perfecet for me!! :):yay::):yay:

Sounds like you are hooked :) (bad pun) Always love to hear of new fly guys!!
I'm am curious to know where you got into the coho. I'm not asking for any "honey hole" type info, just general area. Thanks in advance!!
