I've seen some interestingly strange names on this BB. Since it's the beginning of a new year, I though some of you might care to post, explaining the meaning behind your Username. I know some are very obvious, but some are very unique.

(I.e) Mine is rather simple with a triple meaning.1)Always caught the biggest Chinook at the head of an incoming tidal flow ...
2) Bought a boat that I couldn't afford ...
3) Have a wife and daughters with many different weekend plans that 'don't' include fishing... See... Hogtide/Hogtied

Fuzzybutt & Angel
01-01-2001, 06:29 PM
Fuzzybutt got his handle after a day out on the pier, when he had hooked three big king salmon, and lost all three! After that he gained the nickname Fuzzybutt http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I gained the handle Angel from being an Oncology Nurse (working with cancer patients)
My patients kept calling me an angel, and the name stuck! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif I was Angel when I met Fuzzy in a chatroom, and I moved to the USA and we were married 11 months later http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Pilar

The name of a famous man's boat (Ernest Hemingway), also the name of mine. The original wooden 'Wheeler' is treated as a shrine and preserved in a shed near Havana Cuba. My 'Pilar' is much smaller and made of fiberglass.

Both boats spent much of their useful lives in the Florida Keys. Different boats, same attitude.

The bend is your friend!

"Outlaw" has been my radio name for about 25 years, when we are hunting. We used to have a lot of fun and this was kind of an earned name. we pushed the rules to the limits. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Now we have got the name on the water as the "Fish4Fun" guys that's the name of my sled.

WheresMyBobber
01-01-2001, 07:24 PM
There's a story behind my username...

A few years ago I took one of my fishing partners bobber fishing in the Trask tidewater. He is an experienced salmon and steelhead fisherman, but he had never bobber fished for chinook before. After showing him how to rig up, change depths, and explaining the different types of "takes" he might see etc..., we started fishing.

It was one of those slow days, not a whole lot going on. I was working my bobber and bait in and around some pilings close to the boat, and he was working the deeper water out in the middle of the hole. Well, obviously my friend got bored and wasn't paying attention, because all of the sudden he yells "WHERE'S MY BOBBER?". http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif I looked over and followed his line down to the water, and saw that it was coming towards the boat with the bobber no where in sight! I said "you've got a fish on man, reel in your slack and set the friggin hook!".

Well, he got the fish, about a 27 pounder. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif But after that he never took his eyes off his bobber again!

Ever since then it's become kind of an ongoing joke that I have to remind him about from time to time. (that's what friends are for)

Hammer Bob
01-01-2001, 07:30 PM
I worked a lot of construction prior to moving to the west coast. I met some people who were building a cabin using fire-killed doug fir which had been milled years before...hard as all get out. When I met these folks they could only drive nails (without bending them) into the wood by placing two or three vice grips on the nail and removing the vice grips as they drove the nail in. They were all quite amazed that I could drive nails without bending them or using the vice grips. I got the name Hammer Bob that day and it has stuck ever since.

Kwiky
01-01-2001, 08:04 PM
When I first got my driftboat a few years ago and started fishing on the S. Santiam, I really had no clue what I was doing. I had a little fishing hole that I stumbled into a fish or two out of, but nothing consistent. A very nice guide (who's name I no longer remember) clued me in to kwikfish and provided some friendly instruction on how and where to fish 'em, wrapping them, etc. Later that summer I was bagging springers with consistency, and that became his nickname for me. Each morning we ran into each other, it was "Hey Kwiky, got into any fish yet?" Thanks to him, more often than not the response was "Yah, got one in the boat."

Kwiky

Oops, the wife says she gave me this nickname, I just have it spelled wrong http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Snagly
01-01-2001, 10:22 PM
So-named by my fishing buddies after snagging (somewhere other than in the mouth)four sockeye in a row, culminating in a 15 min battle with an 8lb hen that until the very end I didn't know I'd hooked in the tip of the tail. Not a lot of leverage on the fish when you hook them there . . . and it was captured on videotape as "Snagly has another one on the line . . . we haven't seen it but we're certain it's foul-hooked . . . here it comes into view for the first time!"(Hysterical laughter and a shaking camera as a TAIL comes up from the depths of the lake.) At that point you have to go with the flow, so Snagly it is.

I've been fishing for salmon, steelhead and sturgeon for over 20 yrs now and have yet to catch one. In fact no one has ever caught one near or in the same boat as me. In the late 80's I started a guide service thinking that would do it but nope, nothing.

Too easy. When speaking to a group, I usually start it out with hey y'all, so I am not dead yet so I haven't ended that greeting with "watch this" http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif That's pretty much what a buddy (familiar face on the river) called me last year and after running into him this year, that's how he remembered me. I would hook a fish at the Barrier Dam and get ready to walk it down and say "Hey Y'all move your @sses, fish on and coming down." The accent really put this name over. Accent slowly fades away. Great topic/post. I still love Tanner's signature line because It's True, Oh It's True.

ShureSkunk obviously needs some help guys. Any ideas to help this pathetic fishermen - not that there is anything wrong with that http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif . And no, I did not put up this moniker to joke around; as I often do on the chat room on Wednesday's. It is someone else. ...

First, chuck the banana scent SSK! I didn't really think fish were that adverse to it, until I heard your sad story. If nothing else I have to admire your perseverance!!! Geez, no fish in 20 years and you keep getting off the mat, dust yourself off, and get right back on the bull. Cool. You have my respect! The next thing is chuck using my posted techs; they're all hog wash. You really think I would give away my A-game secrets?!? ...

OK, just kidding about that. My techs are good. Not a single fish in 20 years of trying though. WOW! I've heard of guys that fish that long and keep after it even though they catch a fish about every other year. But man, this is pathetic! HELP this guy fishers. ...

Let's see ... ah, have you seen any fish caught where you are fishing? If not, are you fishing for salmon and steelhead and sturgeon in a small pond or lake by any chance? The first thing you have to do is fish WHERE THE FISH ARE. And do you get out more than once a year? ... Excuse me for yelling, I'm losing my patience here. Will someone give this guy a clue. Thanks. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

SpinnerMan
01-02-2001, 11:45 AM
My name was given to me by my fishing buddy. We have been fishing together since the sixties!

I usually use spinners and he has seen me catch a lot of fish.

One time we were trying some other lures for steelhead. After fishing for most of the day and catching no fish, seeing no fish, hearing of no fish, I put on a spinner and caught a nice steelie on the first cast.

When I got the fish in my friend said "way to go SpinnerMan".

And I have been SpinnerMan ever since.

kingofbacklash
01-02-2001, 05:49 PM
Originally I used fearsnofish, but couldn't get back on the BB with it. This name was one I came up with three years ago because I had a tuff year of salmon fishing and needed a name that would get my attitude right.
As for kingofbacklash I got this nickname when I started casting from the bank Sturgeon fishing. I could bird's-nest a reel back then like you wouldn't believe. It got to where the line was costing me everytime I cut down into the spool to free the backlash. So I got to where I could undo any backlash no matter how bad they were. I got so good at undoing them that all my fishing buddies would give me their reels to undo too. The friend that taught me how to sturgeon fish named me kingofbacklash.

Crusty
01-02-2001, 08:06 PM
Larry Jones of elk call fame named me. I have written for years and was the hunting editor of a traditional bow magazine titled "The Longbow" (now defunct). I had written a series of spoofs bordering on risque and Larry, a very sincere "born again" Christian, got hold of the proofs and chided me. "John, this isn't you. You're not that crusty"

Well, actually I was/am, so I used "Crusty" as a nom de plume for that series of articles and it stuck. I've gotten worse as old age has set in and I have seen with my own eyes "Lord, what fools these mortals be." [Did you know that was stolen by Willy from Seneca (8BC - AD 65)?]

Thanks for the e-mail RT and special advice for ending my 20 yr skunk. It's really nice when someone as busy as you can take time to reach out and help a lone fishless guy like me. A couple more questions if you can take the time: regarding the low-clear water steelhead tech you sent me, where is a good place to purchase the lemon-yellow rainsuit and big white cowboy hat you recommend? And regarding the sturgeon fishing tips, was that regular unleaded or super that you recommend for smelt brine?

No, no, no 'skunk. When I wrote "'Yall fishes the gin clear water with a bright yellow rain coat and big white cowboy hat", I was refering to our BB member "Hey_Yall"; not a suggestion of what you should do. My point was to NEVER copy that guy! And are you talking about gasoline? No, no, NO. You aren't reading my stuff right 'skunk! I wrote for you to use a super smelt brine. I don't want to post that recipe on the BB, so you are just going to have to decipher the instructinos, then soak your smelt in it overnight before you go out fishing. Sturgeon fishing! As for my car, look for a red Suburu wagon parked alongside coastal rivers around the Tillamook area http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif . If I'm not there for some reason, just do as the song says "If ya can't be with the one you want, fish the one your with". (jk) ...

I use "chnookie" for a lot of my online stuff. Came originally from the Ray Troll T-shirt 'ain't no nookie like chinookie'. When I lived in Idaho, I went for one of those egotistical personalized plates on my new truck. 'Spawn till you die' wouldn't fit, so I was just going to put "chnooky" on it, but they wouldn't let me because it said "nookie" in it. What can I say, moral majority and all.... Anyway, I had to settle for just "chnook" because "chinook" was of course already gone. So, when I went online, I went to 'chnookie' since I was already used to spelling chinook chnook.

Hey Bill, I think I know who "ShureSkunk" is and what's funny is that guy actually did run a cartopper up from Riverside Park (Safeway hole on the Clackamas River) up to the Coffee Hole past stunned jetsledders. True! Circa late 70's/early 80's. Not near low water of course, but pretty funny. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif Seems he still can't catch fish though http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My home river is the humptulips. When ever the river is in at work I say it is hump time. As in the humptulips is where I should be instead of working.

Come on! Humptime? Hey did you use to live at Oaklake Apts?, well maybe. Ok Slutman, if you would just start using the p-bucket you wouldn't have to bail so often. And you RT, yes, I used to run the Clack with a small prop boat. I knew some day I would graduate to a wheelstanding pram!

Steelheader69
01-05-2001, 10:35 PM
Actually, mine is pretty self explanatory also. I'm a steelheader and was born in 1969. My big problem is I'm almost more of a salmon fisherman then a steelheader, but couldn't find a decent name that didn't sound snobbish. I've been called "King of Kings" by friends for my knack of nailing kings in rivers in the most unlikely places. I have more pics of me with kings then steelhead. I just wish my Dad and I took more pics when I was younger. We never thought that sizes and amounts of fish we used to catch would turn like it has. Well, I figured Steelheader69 sounded good and stuck with it.

OK, now I'm sure I know who SSK is. Maybe we should have a contest for guys to guess who this is. A clue is he catches a few more fish than he tried to convince us there! Hey, several guessed right about Superfly's rocker pic; but we don't have an early pic of ShureSkunk sitting around. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif Another clue, he actually does guide, and very well. (you can't guess Jen - and SSK has to reveal if you're right if he wants to http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'm not going to)

Got the name from gary lommis and tom white on the cowlitz in the early 70's My boat was a big white ski barge with a yellow water line around the boat thus bathtub bob! Fished lower cow before guides moved in!

Well, It goes something like this:

I am an AVID Fisherman.
I love to Flyfish.
I was sitting down, tying some flies, trying to think of a witty name for the board, when it hit me......
No it REALLY hit me....My son threw a bag of Krystalflash at me....and so the story goes....
For those who don't know....KF is a bright, sparkly, tinsel-like fly tying material.

I'd rather be lucky than good.

After reading this board for a while I read a post by RT that suggested the fall chinook caught on the Columbia by anglers anchored off the mouth of the Sandy River were all dark Tules, I was forced to post a response letting him know I had fished the area for years and those fish were almost exclusively nice bright upriver fish. I chose the moniker Young Salt because I probably hadn't had as much experience as RT but I felt I knew what I was talking about. Actually, RT admitted he was just trying to stir things up a bit. Probably the only time he has ever done that.(not).

I earned mine! I rowed the Deschutes with my fishn' huntin' buddy. We traded white water at the oars. Guess what rapids I went through? He also earned a nickname as well (smokey). Whenever he's in camp, the smoke follows him.

I have always liked the scientific name of the Steelhead but I still can't spell it so I abbreviated.

I think Gus Orivston is the a character in the awesome book "The River Why" by David James Duncan. I think maybe he was the pipe smoking fly fisherman that befriended the main character of the book. I can't remember his name.

One night after a day of fishing we were sitting around the fire and doing goofy stuff, I went and grabbed one of the heads off a steelhead and tied it to the top of my head and wore it around for a while. So the nickname "Fishhead" stuck. Had to add the 5 here as someone allready had fishhead

MetalHead
07-01-2001, 01:36 AM
Well I would like to say that it comes from my love of steelhead fishing but in reality I got it one night several years ago when under the influence of some illegal chemicals and copious amounts of alcohol I did this little header from about eight feet onto a rock while snowskiing. When I got back up with only a small bump and no loss of blood my buddies decided that I must have a metal head (oh ya they said it was hollow to) images/icons/smile.gif

I also started out over at P.P. It seemed that everyone's moniker had something to do with steelhead, So I figured since any steelhead over 30lbs probably spent 4 years at sea, it was kind of a cool steelhead-themed moniker images/icons/cool.gif

After a year of using my email adress as my name (tshickam), I have decided to kick it up a notch! images/icons/wink.gif I will now be known as Trick....no applause, please. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Actually, Dan! had refered to me recently in an email as Trick, which is close to tshickam. It sounds catchy and it falls close to the truth. Getting out to fish anymore seems to be a trick at times...three little kids, job, wife, etc....ya know the drill.

Anyways....maybe in another year I'll change it again.

07-01-2001, 09:12 PM
Well when I began my business in Alaska all the good names were taken and I could not come up with a clever name. there were lots of Captains, Captain Bob, Captain Bill,
so I just settled on Captain J. then for my logo I made the J into a shape of a hook. When I put it on my boat the name stuck. (no pun intended) Captain Hook. It became my Radio call sign also. AAARGGHH!!! Off with their heads mateys!!

Buzzo- one of the craziest grunge-rockingest characters to come out of Seattle, leftover from my college days. Part of the Melvins trio. Sometimes we sing praises on slow days- "Slay a fish in the name of Buzzo!"

fishbait
07-02-2001, 01:05 PM
In the early 80's I used to manufacturer and sell an egg cure that had a dye in it. It was called Fishbait's two part egg cure. The name came as you might expect from fish and bait. Unfortunately for me I treated it as a hobby and not a money making venture and by the mid/late 80's others were producing egg cures and doing a much better manufacturing and marketing job than I ever did so I shut down. When the time came for a board name this was the first thing that came to mind.

birdhunter
07-02-2001, 01:38 PM
Well, I picked my name because fishing and hunting are my two greatest passions. Most people around here already had all the good fishing names, so I tried to think of one that had to do w/ hunting. Now as it stands I hunt and fish for just about everything Oregon has to offer, which thankfully is a lot. When I registered it was January and one of the only seasons still open was for waterfowl. Ergo, birdhunter was born.

I also picked this because I was lurking here one day and Jennie wanted to know how those little bitty birds could fly all the way to South america non-stop. Well I wrote her and told her . Mr. Fisherman
07-03-2001, 01:29 PM
Well now,

Funny you should ask images/icons/smile.gif.

You see, I'm completely adicted to fishing. For me it is a way of life. Just check out my signature and you know I'm hopeless, "Live to fish, fish to live."

Well my finances can't keep up with my dependance on fishing to keep my keel even. As a result I have had several, er, discussions with my better half. After she listens to my half baked answer on why I spent so much money on the last fishing trip a common statement would be...."LISTEN HERE MR. FISHERMAN....." I think you get the idea here. Anyway, to emulate the pebble in the stream I decided to just go with it. No point in fighting a loosing battle. She still loves me though and thank God sh likes fish images/icons/grin.gif.

This is a great thread. I haven't had time to read it all but I will.

Tight lines to all....

Well when I finally decided I was going to make a post last night...I thought of all the good names taken. I do have a DB and it is a relic sliderite so instead of coming up with a cutsy self-embellishing name I chose the **** boat name. Oh well..it hasn't let me down yet and it doesn't talk back in a very demeaning manner especially when it hits a submerged rock. I am the one who goes "OW..oo...OW". She does float topside better than most boats but somedays you just don't hit the shallow riffles like you should!!!! Oh well!!!

When I first moved to Oregon about 8 years ago a technician at work asked me if I'd like to go bottom fishing. Of course I said yes. When I got to Newport the next morning at half past dark, I saw the ugliest hand painted bright orange "boat" I've ever seen. Behind the boat were two of the oldest 25hp motors in existence. There was one seat in it the pilot's seat. I got to sit on an old apple crate for the ride out to seal rock.
Needles to say the boat didn't make very good time and I fell fast asleep with my head leaning over the gunwhale. When we stopped to fish I immediately woke up.
He said I was the deepest sleeper he had ever seen. the waves splashing me in the face didn't even bother me.
We limited out that day and had a lot of good days fishing after that, with the same result. I would sleep all the way out and all the way backin, no matter what the weather or conditions were. So he started calling me deep sleeper.
I am! And the name stuck!

This was the first BB I ever entered as a member and contributed to(debatable according to some....see the North River thread). Since it dealt with jet boats of, which I thought I knew something, I created the name from my Hamilton 212 pump, as most can tell. It was a great start with a lot of lively discussion and the ability to meet people like Angel, Boater, RT, Hogtide and others who have all been very helpful and interesting. There are a few of us over here in Idaho who participate on this board and we still offer any help we can give on whitewater jet boating and/or fishing in our neck of the woods, too. One of my other aliases is "Kid Sauk" although I'm not much of a kid anymore at 26, I used to listen to a rock star called Kid Rock and my buddies started calling me "Kid Sauk" which I am currently using on the Piscatorial Pursuits BB.

BTW, for those not familiar with the Sauk river it is pronounced like "sock" not "sow'k" as I have heard many times images/icons/rolleyes.gif
