It gets very few fish anymore Lip. Many years ago it was a nice little zipperlip, with good numbers of steelhead for it's size. Ditto for the upper reaches of the Tualatin; a similar fork to the mainstem Tualatin.

One of the best battles I ever had with a steelhead was in Gales Creek. I caught it in the Balm Grove area. I think that area is closed now and I never hear of anyone fishing it anymore.

It's been years, and I hear that access has been an issue on the tualatin. There use to be a gate that was kept closed by Stimson Lumber?
I caught my only slab there in high school and it was my biggest steelhead ever, a nice 14 lb buck. My partner landed a 12 lb hen and we were off to school.
We then rafted the river in attempt to find better access, oops, don't take a rubber raft down those rivers...kids ya know.

Talked to Jim at the store and he said no fish yet but maybe mid Jan. and feb. They don't stock it anymore so not too many getting up there. Stop and ask him.
I fished the middle stretch a couple of times in December. It's definately not what it used to be but I saw several fish and had a couple of missed take downs. The first day I was tossing sand shrimp on a lark. I stumbled and made a big splash at the edge of the water and watched three big V's run upstream. My second attempt was more deliberate but the water was very low and clear. I could see some nice fish follow my bait and lures across the holes but they just wouldn't bite.

Hawgcatcher are you talking about Jim Campbell at the Glenwood store? We're good friends and the hole behind the store is a good one too. Spot, you might want to check but I think there is a bait restriction on Gales Creek.

Gus , are you from Forest grove??? I went to school there and used to go on lunch and catch steelhead and then go back to class. Used to be a really good river but since they stopped stocking it the numbers of fish have dropped dramatically. For me if I am lucky enough to get one , it goes right back in ...Hatchery or not-John
