View Full Version : Lewis & Clark river?

I used to fish the Lewis & Clark before they gated off access to the upper end. I haven't been down there for a couple years, but is it still gated off? I was thinking of bringing my Mt. bike and riding in to fish. It was gated off due to people dumping their garbage, and I don't think there would be a problem with riding a bike in.

Has anybody been fishing that river? If so, how's it been?

Thanks.

WheresMyBobber,

I also used to fish this river. My Grandfather was a crew boss for Crown when it was managed by them, so everyone in my family was familiar with the area.

Last I heard Cavanah (sp?) gated the river off because of dumping by about everybody including the Port of Astoria and has posted guards. If the guards are gone I would sure like to take a bike for a long ride into go fishing.

Also there are no hatchery fish on this stream as of the last I heard. ODF&W stopped plants when the raod was gated off and with little access to the lower river available they decided to not plant in an area that would have few anglers present.

If you ride in let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply and info. I'll do some homework on guards, biking in, current regs, etc..., and let you know if I learn anything. That used to be a fun place to fish, and I'd sure like to be able to get back in there.

Bobber,

The land you are talking about is owned by Willamette Industries and yes it is gated most of the year. It is usually open during deer and elk seasons in early fall. ODFW stopped planting steelhead in the river a number of years ago, but there still is a small population of "wild" fish. Check regs for specifics.
