View Full Version : Which anchor puller?

When I got the Duckworth a buddy gave me a 5 gallon bucket anchor puller. The type with the rope going thru the center of the bucket. It has cracked and broke to the point of being unusable. It worked OK when it was still in good shape. The only problem I had was when in a strong current the flat bottom on the bucket would like to "catch" the water and try to suck the bucket under.
I had an anchor puller on my christmas list. I got a round bouy type made by Ironwood Pacific from GI Joes. The locking device looks like a short piece of black plastic pipe with the stainless bolt on a slotted hole. After looking around I would guess EZ Anchor would be the best, just by looking at them. It looks like it will cost me about $30 to take this one back and upgrade to an EZ Anchor. I have the large model now which says it is the 60 lb bouyancy model.
Does anybody have any opinions on which ones work better

I have both. I use the Ironwood on my short rope and the E-Z for my long rope. The E-Z is by far better since it's all aluminum. I'd go for the E-Z puller.
My .02 cents.

The best anchor puller would be my wife.....
but I think it would cost you more than thirty dollars for the upgrade. (I can't give you a price since I'm still not done paying)

Hey B.O.E., being a tightwad, I bought the black plastic gizmo at GI Joes too. Three years ago. It still works! So... what would you change? If I spent some money I'd go for the biggest bobber you can get.
The bucket type puller is OK but they can pop if they are not foam filled. We used to make them ourselves. I still make 'one way charlie' anchors out of scrap steel cuz' I hate to throw a $75 store bought anything into the river.
I've heard good things about the EZ anchor too, but man are they proud of it! Yikes! Cheap and works is good for me. Be happy with the black plastic gizmo.
The bend is your friend!

Hey Yall
My wife says to tell you that I have the supermodel, the virtual life size Barbie. (I have always wanted to see one of those things) but....her sister....nice, very nice, lady, she has breasts on her back so she is not that great to look at, but a lot of fun to dance with.

Don't remember the exact name of the one I bought years ago, but it works great. I use an 18" ball inflated to about 24" in diameter. The rope goes through a simple fixture that has a bolt through a slot. Only goes one way. When the anchor pulls, the rope will not slide back past the bolt since it pinches it. All aluminum, never fails. Whole gizmo was about $40 at Larry's (now Fisherman's) several years ago. I like the balls, they float the anchor well. Whatever you go with, make sure it grips the rope. There are some with rings that will pull your anchor, but when you start to retrieve it, the anchor falls to the bottom again. Those are junk...avoid them. And if you're planning to do Bonniville dam area, take at least 400' of rope. Use the 3/8" braided nylon instead of 1/2". Pulls less water and your anchor will hold better unless you get out too far on the pebbly bottom. You'll know if you do...it's a slow backtroll for sturgeon down the middle of the river!

I bought the E-Z Marine puller with the large A-4 bouy, and it works well everywhere but it sure takes up alot of room. It's to bad the E-Z Marine guy is such a tool and so proud of his stuff, but it does work .
