Man I sure miss Sunday afternoons "Fishing the West". They still have a lot of fishing shows especially on the outdoor life channel but its hard to find any really good shows that I'm interested in. Luckily I have about 20 tapes with almost every Larry episode ever done. I think my favorite is with Jim Teeny snagging dark nookers in the fac on the Trask, talk about some ugly fish.

Not sure how "lucky" Larry was, but he made a decent show. With cameras and various angles you can show or not show about anything you want.
A good lead boat with a better fisherman tying up a few out in front of the show boat always made for fish on larrys line, even if it was the second time in for some of those fish.

It was a great show and it featured our interests... Salmon and Steelhead. We were floating the Nehalem one day when Larry and crew came down filming. It would be hard to make a fishing show the way fishing is these days. I always thought the decline in fish was partly responsible for his stores going under. I always liked shopping at Larry's, he had what you needed. Bought a 8'3" Fenwick Boron casting rod there in 1983 that has the finest action of any light rod I have seen. Wasn't cheap but it has great feel. Not expensive by today's pricing. It listed for $199 and I bought it for $130. What would a G. Loomis or a quality Lamiglass run today? $250 or more. Fortunately for me I was such a avid steelheader back then I have plenty of rods still; 3 Fenwicks and 2 LCI's. Mostly bought at Larry's long with a couple vintage shimano reels.

I miss the store but not him. He was a pompous a** and the bankruptcy screwed over alot of people. Seems like there have been a few arrogant "pro fishermen" out there and still are.

"Lucky Larry" is just a name we use to call him, not necesarily a "true" moniker.I agree Stew, he was a major dweeb and *sshole in person but his shows were great, fishing with local guides on local rivers. His son Brad manages Bob's in Longview (I think he's still there), and he is definetely not like his dad.

I'm a fan of the old show too. I think I can shed some light on the lack of availabilty of the old shows.
It used to be you could order old episodes when the show was around. Since Larry went bankrupt, he has opened a fishing travel agency out of Vancouver. Knowing this, I decided to go right to the source and called him out of his office a few years back.
Wanting to know about the availability of the old shows, he explained he sold the rights to the shows to a gentleman in Portland and it was he who I needed to talk to. He gave me the number.
So, I call this guy and explained my desire to get copies ofold shows. To make a long story short, he said he has all the tapes, has no intention of selling copies to the public, and was just going to "sit on them" and possibly re-air them at an unknown, later date. The guy came across as pompous, arrogant, and really put me off.
So, I don't hold much hope of seeing them again. Maybe we can talk "America's Outdoor Journal" into doubling or tripling their salmon and steelhead coverage...god knows they need it.

I liked his shows for content in info, but met him one day in Oregon City store. As I was talking to a salesman about a rod, Mr. Larry in his 3-piece suit tapped the guy on the shoulder and told him to go take care of something like right now. Pi$$ed me off and I personally miss him like a hemmeroid! I do have some of his old shows taped. Suppose we could always do a "loaner" program within the gang to allow folks to see ones they don't have. Not sure about this, though, as there are copyright laws and such. Anyhow, just a thought.

I was in the Gresham store once when I overheard someone ask Larry when he was going to open a store on the west side. Larry answered "when I make my next million" What a clown! There are others that have made a living exploiting our fisheries here in the northwest while not exactly being sportsmen. There is a well known"flyfisherman"
who shall remain nameless who made it a regular habit of taking his entourage including movie camera along with him whenever he fished. I saw him on the Kilchis hooking one yellow chum after another telling his audeince what great sport it was.
Disgusting!!!!

I loved his shows until I read about the surgical tubing attached to a coat hanger to simulate a fighting fish. I idolized the guy when I was a teenager and never missed a show until I found out he wasn't the greatest fisherman on the planet. His shows were pretty close to fictional in my book.
I actually grew up in the same neighborhood as his brother Roger Schoenborn. He passed away about a year ago. I seen Larry a few times and the impression I got was also of arrogance. His Brother and his family were nice. His sister in-law was a substitute english teacher at my high school outside of Astoria and she used to tell us stories about how Larry dropped out of college and started out in the outdoor business. She was a very nice lady too.
Last I heard was Larry was a "guide in Alaska". I bet he could show you how to fight a hanger in the water with the best of them.

C'Mon BigStew! You can mention Jim Teeny's name in vain here! Too bad the guy can't catch a fish other than spawners on their spawning beds! He does cast a nice fly though, great technique...Just one of those arrogant $#******** like mentioned above!

I suppose if I had a split shot on my fly line I could cast good too! What we need is the "Gone Fishin" show. You could show things like the proper pee jug technique on the river. Hey maybe Bi-Mart would sponsor you!

So, 'Stew, you're my long lost twin. Here's an opportunity to see if genetics or environment play a bigger role in how people turn out. I've got a beer belly and real thin hair on top. How you makin out? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif ...
I have to agree with tshick', when I saw how they made that show with 'hanger fish' and other boats out hooking fish for Larry, it wasn't the same anymore. The best part to me was the excellant scenery filming with Tom Grant piano in the background.

Ok, you pee...ked my curiosity, is there a better pee jug technique? A co-worker explained how an old time fisherman used a garden hose. The hose was used like an extension over the side of the boat, true story guys, no joke. May not be a preferred method for women. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Never met Larry, never cared to. The only thing he had going was selecting good guides to fish with, excellent film crew and videophotography and great music. At least he got 3 things right out of 4. He is not a fisherman.

I don't know boys...I LIKE FISHIN" SHOWS! And , salmon, steelhead , maybe hali's...that's fishin'! Aside from "L"s personal attributes, his show always focused on the fish and the waters I consider to be adreniline boosters. Oh, sure.. a little coat hanger here, a big snag there, a personal rod bearer and hookup boy now and then... but he was in the right place, chasin' the right stuff for me! Hey, he wasn't showin' rubber fish in the box, was he?...was he ???
Geez, watch TV fishin' nowdays and you see dude downrigger fishin' lake Chelan with a gang troll for 6" trout. Or a patch-covered bass dude, skatin' em across the surface after one jump. I'd rather watch 'Gardening with Ed Hume'...ok, I watch the bass and trout stuff. How about TV walleye. Save your money by buying a reel with a drag; just reel that dead stick in. And.. sturgeon on TV...fer gosh sakes, never fish for something your afraid to even look at when its next to the boat. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Better quit, now that I've offended everyone I know, except for Larry.
I wonder how much it costs to get one of those rod bearer/ hookup boys?...wonder if they would pack in sandwiches for me?

I don't know, I thought it was a well done show. Ya, once you found out about all the hollywood trickery it kind of spoiled it, but trickery hasn't stopped me from watching all the other shows out there http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
The best part was that my girls were very young when that show was on, and we would watch it every sunday before dinner like clockwork. We'd jump all over when Larry would hook into a big one (however he did it http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif )When the show was taken off the air, they kept asking me for at least a year "what happend to the fishin show daddy?" http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Those are good memories, that show means a lot more to me than fishing.....

I used to enjoy MOCKING Larry while fishing. For example, while releasing a tiny trout: "Nice fish, Larry!" "Oh, look at the color on that one."
Or coming back from a good skunking:
"Well, we saw a lot of nice water out there today."
I do have a prized "Fishing the West" mug - AUTOGRAPHED by THE MAN - my wife got it for me for Christmas one year, it was a great laugh. The inscription reads ... "Nice fish. Larry Schoenborn" I still have a Fishing the West cap too!
The show was pretty good, Larry was the total Goofus though. Maybe that added to the entertainment

I miss the show a little. Nice that they went to our local spots, till Larry started going to Arizona and crap like that.
Larry was a total tool though.
Hey we have Hot Tamale now, those of us in the Portland area anyway.
Even though Larry was a geek I looked forward to the show. PeterMac, I have the same memories coming home from fishing with my boys and watching Larry while my wife cooked dinner.I would tape it on my old beta machine and we would watch the good driftboat trips over and over. We to still use some of the old sayings like "nice fish Larry, is it boondoggling or boondogging?" Any fishing show is a good show especially when they are fishing for Steelhead or Salmon.

Hey Gone Fishin', Jim Teeny has a booth at the show also. Maybe you and Lee need to come to the valley this weekend and attend the show! Kim

Knew that Larry when her grew up and he was always the "One". He couldn't fish too good then. Did you ever see how he held his rod? But the fishing in the western rivers was great. Seeing him fish with local guides and people that I knew, made it worth it. He just got so overloaded with his films that his business suffered and then everything went downhill from there.
Hey Kim are you lining up those Halibut fishermen for your Alaska B&B? Good Luck from an old friend.
