I was out bass fishing on Saturday when I pulled in about a 10" LMB on a Rattlin' Rap. I went to unhook him by grabbing him on the by the lower lip, but I was only able to get 1 of the hook points out. So, I went to reposition my thumb so I could get to the hook better, but when I let up a little the fish thrashed, unhooked himself, and fell back in the water. Next thing I know I look at my hand and I've got one of the (barbed) hook points stuck straight into my pinkie. I go to pull it out and it won't budge. After a few more tries and some serious pain, I realize that the fishing's over and that I have to get to a hospital to have it taken out. About 30 minutes later l walk into the hospital with a Rattlin' Rap hanging from my finger. They ended up having to numb out my finger (with a couple of pretty painful shots), cut into my skin, and use some kind of special tool to get the thing out. And now the the tip of my finger has no feeling, but hopefully it will come back.
This is not the first time I've been stuck by a crankbait but I thought I had learned my lesson. So, I'm wondering if anybody has some tips for how to unhook a crankbait (besides crimping the barbs, which I'm reluctant to do because it seems like I lose a lot of fish that way). I see the guys on TV grabbing the fish by the body, but I'm concerned that that may not be good for them. Thanks for any suggestions.

On a recent trip I ran into a guy that had a treble buried into his forearm. He ask if I knew how to get it out and I said yes. Take a piece of fishing line and make a loop and put it around the shank of the hook. Push down hard on the eye of the hook and snap the line. It will pop the hook right out but it will hurt. It is always easier doing this on someone else:laugh:

*Disclaimer
I don’t want this to sound like an ad for one product so I have included two.
With that being said…..

I used to have the same problem. I would suggest you buy a Boga Grip or the Berkley Lip Grip. This allows you to hold the fish in one hand and pliers in the other hand. It is safer for you and for the fish. In fact you will not have to touch the fish at all. With some practice you can even use it for removing a larger fish from the water without the use of a net. I just got mine this year and now use it all the time especially when using crank baits.

Ouch I have been there done that.

When I lived in San DIego I had it happen to me with a 30 pound yellowfin on the end of a CD-18 and he started doing the tuna death vibe.

We did the line thing and it worked, but it did hurt but when you are 40 miles out on a 18 foot boat you deal with it there and keep fishing. I have had jigging spoons in my hand and on one occasion I had to poke all the way through the web of my hand and cut the barb to get the hook out.

Then there is a the time I had a spinner bait go all the way through my lower lip and up into my top lip. It happened so fast I did not even feel it. It actually pinned my mouth shut.Luckily the top one did not get the barb into the lip so we lifted my top lip off the point of the hook and cut the hook right below the barb and slid it out. That was all due to a fishing buddy who was not paying attention to his back cast. I was not too mad considering it was the very first time that Lake Barrett has ever been opened and it was a fish a cast and he was so excited.

When stuff like that does happen it is always nice to have a partner there so you can do the line trick. The funny thing is a lot of the accidents happen from that person also.

Talk about hurt . In my e-mail today a friend of mine ( after looking at 6 pictures ) of different views of a treble hook buryed in a persons left EYE ouch , two of the hooks were past the barbs . I am not sure that we are friends after seeing those pictures . The fishermen was at a medical facillity and having it removed . The e-mail didn't say if he lost his site or not . Worse pictures that i have seen .

I've had to do the same thing a couple of times. Main differences are I apply preasure just past the entry point of the hook (not on the shank), and pull with even preasure on the line, if you jerk/snap it you risk the chance of doing more damage.

Hope you are able to take the advice of some of the above suggestions. You'll find that all are much cheaper than a visit to the Hosp. Wait until you get the medical bill!!! You could buy a new trolling motor for the cost of a hook removal.
