Bait O' Eggs

As this summer comes to a close, I reflect on what has been an unusuall year for me. I typically find myself trout fishing high lakes, usually ones you backpack into with a rubber raft. Having purchased an ocean boat, I found myself this year chasing tuna offshore every weekend the ocean allowed me to go 50 miles offshore. I kinda missed chasing trout this year with all my ocean adventures :depressed:
If my life depended on catching trout to eat, I would like a worm, but they dont backpack real well for extended periods of time :noway: My favorite go to lure is a Bingo Bug when it comes to artificial lures. Moves in the water like a quickfish, yet has feathers coming out of the plastic body making it look like a bug/fly in the water.
I did a search on the trout forum and couldnt find a single post on a the bingo bug  I also have some of the frisky flies made by the same people but like the feathers in the lure better than the all plastic body.
The two retired greyhound bus drivers who started the company were a kick to talk to at the sportsman show, but I know the company has changed hands a time to two since them. :depressed:
My favorite way to fish this was about 100 feet behind the boat, no weight just running slightly under the water on a slow troll behind the rubber raft. :smash: :smash:
Anybody here a bingo bug fan?

I have a couple of Frisky Flys that I have tried for kokanee with no luck. They have good action. I'll have to try the Bingo Bug

Bait O' Eggs,
A rubber raft and a high lake is my absolute favorite way to fish trout as well. I've never heard of a Bingo Bug, where do you get them? Can you post a picture of one, sounds like a good thing to have in the creel?
Thanks.

I have a considerable collection of both, I know the distributor in the Willamette Valley. I use them the same way as you with one exception. Weight, I long line them as you but some times with blades and weight letting the wind blow me and using the electric to keep me stright. I prefer banana wights over split shots like the maker suggest, I agree the feathered ones do out preform the all plastic. Have you tried the florescent colored ones? I some times try them on small creeks, fish them like a hot shot or flat fish.....that is when I use a split shot(not the reusable kind,to much spin)keeps the lure down just enough to entice a strike - Don't think I have ever talked to some one else that has even heard of them. Hope this helps..

They look like this, (kinda hard to see the shape without a couple angles)

They come in a variety of colors, I like the green, black or brown bodies. All mine are the same size, but I know they come in several sizes. the feathers are cast right in the plastic.
I have never tried to run weight in front of them, as I enjoy just having the fish on and nothing else like a bunch of flashy hardware to pull in with the fish.
I know in 1999 according to there webpage, they caught the Oregon state record Kokanee, but I have never used them for Kokenees. I usually catch rainbow or brook trout on them in the lakes I frequent.
I sure am jonsing to head for a high lake and drag some of these around. A dozen trout day sounds like fun right now.

I just did a search and found the company online, it appears you can only order them direct? They look like they may have the same action as a flatfish, do they have to be tuned?
The lures are fairly spendy considering shipping is so much so what sizes do you recommend? I want to use them in high lakes trolled behind a raft slowly, I usually troll F3/F4 size Flatfish or #70/#60 Hotshots, that should help with a size recommendation.
Thanks for any advice, think they will be my new fishing additions.

I have no idea what size I have  The hook is about the size of a worm hook I would use
They were 3 for $5 at the sportsman show when I first found them. I bought a couple dozen all the same size.
I have never tried to tune them  at the speed I slow slow troll them, I dont think they would want to run off to the side to much like an untuned plug  The feathers probably help stabilze the lure and make it run truer  They do jiggle around going thru the water though. :smash: :smash:
I think there was a place selling them at the sportsman show last year or maybe the year before. Cant remember for sure
I am starting to sound like an add for them  just a product I believe in and always have success with.
Missing a good days trout fishing here at the office today :help:

I have seen them forsale at retail stores in Bend. It might have been Sportsman's Warehouse.
(I was at Sportsman's during lunch and did not see any.)

I have a few of these sitting in my tackle box, ive never used them and i had to think real hard where i even got them. Seems if my memory serves me correctly, i got them at a craft and bizzare show 10 plus years ago at the Portland Expo center from a guy that was selling custom rods there. I bought one of his custom rods (cant be longer than 3'-6") and he threw them in on the deal. If i recall i have a green one and a darker colored one.
Now atleast i know what they are!

For those that have used them. What colors have worked the best? I might order some, maybe stick to black, white, and green.

Fisherman's has them -I don't think they go by either of the above names but they are the feathered type. I complained once about the selection being rather sparse and the guy said the vendor only stocks them once a season and when they're gone....
They can be deadly at times. I've found a few that don't seem to be too well tuned and spin pretty bad. They do seem to work better at a VERY slow speed- rowing or wind drifting.

See what the ole salt boat does to ya - you forget about all the fun there is to poisen water fishies. Gotta say I've never tried a Bingo, but they look like fun (I'll have to horse trade you for a few). Its been way too long since I hiked anywhere after a fish - last was Golden Trout in the Sierra's not far (21 miles) from Immigrant Gap.
One of the best trips on the water I had this year was on the Mckenzie three generations across three drift boats - what a trip - Erin's first guided trip (7yr) and she lost count at 20 and she doesn't like fishing :hoboy:
Something I've always loved doing is casting a small black and silver quick fish with pencil lead - just deadly! I wanta try some of these

I have access to the local supplier here in Oregon. If anyone is interested in them, PM me and I will give you his web site. I am sure if I posted it, it would be removed.......he is not a sponser on this site.

The frisky fly/bingo bug was invented by Floyd Gumm 35 years ago.He sold the mold and the patient. He was a great fly fisherman.I have some that he made me in the mid 70s.

Hey guys, new to the forum. I love the Bingobugs. I fish with probably 5 boxes full of them {600}all sizes and colors. I was Canadian distributor when Chuck was still in charge. Now that it is sold, distribution in Canada has fallen off. I find they are very effective, and to some extent you can "match the hatch". Good fishin

Also new to the forum. I am a fellow Canadian in north west BC. Have found the Bingo Bug very effective here but after buying out the local retailer of his 5 bugs I find they are impossible to purchase. I wonder if you would be interested in parting with 100 or so?
Has anybody actually gotten their hands on any Bugs since this post started. I'm a flatfish troller, but would love to try these out.

Not familiar with Bingo Bugs but have heard of them. A quick google search netted the only sales link I could find that works. It is for a wholesaler that only sells in quantity called Bubba's Bait Barn.
Curious if a wiggle bug might work as an alternative. They are like a woolybugger fly with a strip of foam pulled over the back creating a flatfish style banana shape. I could see size being a limiting factor though as wiggle bugs are tough to tie and make work right on hooks smaller than size 8. Well for me any ways. No sensitive takes on them. It's a violent smash and dash.
