I guess no one goes fishing at Lost creek so his my reply to my post.
On the water Saturday at 10:45 am. Trolled from the marina buoy along the east shore in about 50 feet of water at about 30 to 40 feet deep, water temp was 57 degrees. Used my old standby trolling gear. Ford fender with wedding ring in the middle of about 24 inch leader and a good old worm. My cousin Steve caught two on the way up to Peyton Bridge. I was using my usual short boat rod and he was using a 8 1/2 ft spinning rod and as I watched his pole tip I could see his 'stuff' was working better. So I drug out my trusty old 8 1/2 foot rod and rigged the same stuff. As we went around the first point after the bridge I started catching fish too. The parasites were on them but some had very few.
The first pass by "Red Rock Point" was very disappointing. The fish finder was absolutely silent and blank. I thought it may have froze up but the speedo was still working. We started a turn and bang, I hooked a nice 17 inch rainbow. We continued to work the area up and down stream near Red Rock Point and filled the livewell with two limits. We headed down to the marina and pulled out at about 4:50pm. The weather was perfect and the breeze was nice and the fish were biting. All in all a great day.

Rick, sounds like you had a great day, where is Lost Creek Lake ? I have never heard of it, trolling for Rainbows - sweet way to spend the day. I have all ways said "I don't trust a fish that won't eat a worm", looks like you tested my saying.........were you using a downrigger ? I just started using one, something about knowing where your presentation is.. Great post, keep them coming...........

Lost Creek Lake is 30 miles NE of Medford. Great fishing and camping facility. My favorite brecause it is easy to get to and has fish in it too.
Just acquired a Cannon Easy-troll 2 and am going to get it mounted right after I get home from Elk Camp (leaving today).

Rick, man that is one heck of a back-up, that's not a boat launch, it's a drive. Cool looking water, do you use down riggers to fish it ? Great pictures, can you get a boat in all year ?

#1 on my to-do list today is mount the Canon Easy-troll 2 that I acquired recently. #2 on my to-do list is to go try it out. That boat ramp in the picture goes a lot farther into the lake, thank goodness! But that is probably as low as the Corps of Engineers will drop the water level this year, unless we get a lot of unexpected early rainfall which doesn't seem likely as late as it is. Yes, we can launch there for free all year, and the lake is open for fishing for everything year round.

Chuck, :help: this downrigger looks like a little overkill, (Canon Easy-Troll 2) but the price was right. Tell me what weight ball do you use? Have you ever tried attaching your attractant (ford fender. etc) to the ball and then putting the line clip at the end of all that and then when the fish takes it you are only reeling in the fish. Ever tried DuBro releases? Very small and don't seem to be too hard to use and they are adjustalbe for differdnt line sizes.
Thanks

Rick as far as putting my blades on the end of my cannon ball, the answer is yes I have tried it and wasn't to pleased with it. Seems like to much of a hassle, I have since tried placing a ChemLite on the swivel in between the main line and leader. This seems to work better and far less of a hassle. I do like the idea of light line fishing with no blades, the ball weight depends on the speed. I find myself averaging around 2 mph (1.5 - 2.5 mph) so I use a 10# ball, I have a 4# and 6# in the boat but they seem to track to far back and you lose your controlled depth, and thats why I started using a down rigger for the controlled depth. The release I use is from a Scotty down rigger, I like the Clothes Pen style, my down rigger came with a release but I didn't like it, so I started using different ones until I found one I liked. One more thing sound, light and scent are three very strong attractants under water, this doesn't mean you need all three to succeed in fishing. Pick the one or combination of them that you like and have at it. Just watch your hands around the spool when lowering your ball, I have experience here, wish I didn't but I do. Tight lines and fish on.

Chuck, Well, all went as planned yesterday. Got on the water about 8:45 and of course went to my favorite spot. Took a new friend John with me and we had a ball. We traded secrets and tips and tried new stuff. Got the downrigger out and hooked it up with the "riggin" attached to the ball and all went OK but no fish. I did get a couple of strikes, so I am encouraged. Worked it for about half an hour, then brought it in and hooked everything up in the convetional manner and caught fish. I still think that I can use the "riggin on th ball" method I just need to fine tune it a little more. We caught a bunch of fish and kept a few for the smoker.
The parasites were there still but not as bad as in mid summer. The fish ranged in the teen size and that is a lot of fun on light gear.

Rick, keep me posted and I will do the same to you on our down rigger trials. I know they work, I just haven't managed to master it yet. I just have so much confidence in my usual way I can't seem to leave it. Just out of curiosity how far back from the clip on your down rigger do you let lure go ? I have tried anywhere from 20 ' to 150', i was just wondering about your ideas on the matter. Thanks for keeping in touch, it's nice to have a sounding board on this stuff..

Chuck, I ran about 24" of leader behind the Ford fender, then a wedding ring setup and then about 18" to the worm. I hadn't thought about using more line behind the "riggin" but I will try that next time. I guess that some folks have a theory that the ball and cable can frighten fish away, could be ??? Maybe I will just turn the music up louder on the stereo to compensate  LOL!!
