Was on the river at 7:00 am this morning, Central Oregon in the early fall is quite spectacular to say the least. Got these two Rainbows early in the morning, the second was a bit harder to get in than the first. Both beauties, one was just a little brighter but both were gorgeous. Sorry couldn't help myself.
The fishing was a tad tougher, spent most of the morning trying to find the fish, once I found them the wind made it tough to stay on top. I managed one Rainbow Trout and one Brookie, The Rainbow was tempted by a Gold w/red dots Jakes lure trolling thru the channel a couple hundred yards from the mouth and the Brookie was seduced by a Night Crawler from a slip bobber just above the weeds. All in all a nice day there were only two other boats that I could see on the south end of the lake.....week day fishing - good stuff.

Beauty pictures but where's the pictures of the fish? Glad you had a good day, how is the lake level, boat launch, etc? A day at Crane is better than "almost" everything I can think of! Glad you shared your day, thanks. Did you see my feathered friend today?

Sounds like a good day! Love that place, my dad still tells me about driving there on a gravel road when I was in diapers!

The lake level was - according to Bureau of Reclamation it is at 61% of full.....that translates into 4' deep and the Quinn River boat launch....plenty deep enough for my small boat (15' Smoker Craft). That is about 5 1/2 to 6' below full pool. The water temp. was 57 degrees f. in the main body and 54 at the boat launch. I didn't get any pictures of the fish, due to wave action and being by myself...Didn't mark any fish on the sonar in the sticks, but once I got out in the main body and found the channel.....man the thing lit up like a fish farm. There was another boat in the channel inside the sticks a beautiful wooden drift boat...just something about a wooden boat.

Thanks for the update and information. I guess Crane gets drained down in the summer too. I've never been to Crane when it wasn't almost full but in the pictures you posted you sure can see the trees. I wonder if those weren't kokes that lit up your screen in the channel as I've heard they are still in Crane? We used to catch lots of them years ago but haven't for a while.

When the water get's low look for the holes, Look for water say 5 or 6' deep, then goes to 8 or 9' this is where the big ones will lay!

Thanks Joe, all the information from this site is really starting to pay off......When the water level drops more and I am sure it will - where do you launch your boat ? I did stop by Rock Creek to check the ramp out and there isn't much left. Thanks again.

I don't know why, but I camp at the campground near the resort, fish the hole near the channel there and sneak into the trees close to the main lake, and try to find a spot where the bigs one's arn't going to win! (busting me off on a stump or tree) I also switch to a light steelhead rod and level wine, so I have a little more control! In a couple of weeks, you can take your scatter gun and fish and wack some mallards!
