I have a hard time figuring out Fall trout. I know some folks do very well and can catch some large fish. I don't seem to do well with flies this time of year. Often, many Central Oregon lakes have had very big hatches and my guess is the fish are gorged. Trolling with lures also doesn't seem to offer as good success as usual for me.

Does anyone have favorite techniques for Fall? Or a favorite fishery or species of trout?

East lake in October usually from 3pm till dark and Wickiup any time once the water levels are drawn down (October) long line trolling rapalas, sometimes on a downrigger. Have had some 20 fish evenings at East.

Fall fishing at Crane Prairie is my favorite time of year to fish Crane. The brook trout are schooling up in the Cultus channel and the big rainbows are feeding aggressively. We use small rapala's and troll them. The key is to have a lot of line out or use a electric motor so you don't spook the fish. Crane in the fall is pretty shallow. The only thing to watch out for is the duck hunters. I been trolling the Cultus channel and had shot gun pellets land close the boat. Hope this helps and good luck.

Most lakes, floating line, 12-15' leader, size 12-14 wet fly/emerger pattern (preferably grey in color and tied sparse), sssllooowwww troll. Put plenty of fly line out to get that bug away from you.

Fall fish can be spooky but with the colder temps they are also aggressive feeders. Gotta fatten up for the winter.
