We have some long deep scratches on the side of our fiberglass hull which unfortunately is burgundy in color with the white line underneath showing.
Recently, we tried repairing some knicks in the hull bottom with Jel resin and hardener. Terrible job to do yourself. We had to really sand a lot, clean and then brush the jel on and sand it smooth again with different wet dry papers. Ugh! :depressed:
Any other ideas? Is their a GOOD FIBERGLASS REPAIR SHOP near Newport?
We want to keep the boat looking nice but bummpers don't always protect it like we want.

you know, some pictures of the wreakage would really help!
Maybe some of the "before" and "after" process you tried?...

There is some stuff called Marine Tex that is great for that kind of stuff
Paul
I just did some repairs with the Marine Tex product. The result wasn't bad for my first try. I'm sure I could do much better on my second try. A couple key points.
1) Go slow on the color match. Take your time and get it right. A little color goes a long way. Add one drop at a time.
2) Tape off the area around the repair. I used the 3M blue tape. Great stuff. The closer you place the tape to the repaired area, the less extra you will have to remove/sand.
3) Fill the hole/scratch and then scrape level. The last critical step is to smooth out the repair with the clear plastic sheet they provide. I think Saran Wrap would work fine too. Place the sheet over the repair and smooth it with your finger. Wait for it to dry and remove the sheet
If you want to keep your boat looking nice.....don't use it! LOL Scratches are just part of the game.

Great suggestions? We are investigating to see what will be the easiest in our opinion.
Thanks for the input!

... whew ... I used some Marine Tex the other day, quickie repair, didn't pay attention to the "color" and as mixing up the compound turns shiny BLACK ... nice on white fiberglass ... but it's minor repair and out of sight so no big deal (snap screw pulled out and needed to "glue" back in; had drilled some holes to put scuppers cover on and errored in placement) ... HOLY SMOKEY'S ... stuff sets up fast and hard ... within two hours I could sand/drill ... the snap screw is in place and bullet proof.
