I don't know what year Mercury you're working on. I rebuilt an early 70's 50hp a couple of years ago. The Sierra gasket kits I got were not that great. I guess they are packaged to cover several years and models, so you end up with extra gaskets. I had a problem with the water pump gaskets, especially. After getting it all back together, it was overheating. It turned out one of the gaskets under the pump was wrong. I bought a Mercury brand kit and it solved the problem. I did get a seal kit for the lower end that worked fine. I hope this helps.

Yup....cheap is just that I looked at the siera stuff and bought the factory Merc stuff.
Does not pay to do it twice.....

Sierra fuel/gas filters, thermostats, and maybe even a water pump, sure. Anything technical like head and outdrive gaskets, go with OEM/Mercruiser. I've R & R'd a few outdives. Only problems were with non-Merc parts. Coincidence? I think not.

:yeahthat:
I had a Sierra fuel line assembly that was top-notch quality. A lot nicer than Tempo. I wouldn't recommend anything other than OEM for internal parts, other than roller bearings. I had to get a new OEM switchbox for my Merc and it cost about the same as an aftermarket.

I had a rash of bad electronic ingnition modules from Sierra for my 260HP Mercruiser. Got a Quicksilver part(Merc OEM) and it solved the problem. It was cheaper too!!
