whats up ifishers! another question from tree: what do you folks run on your boats for smaller radar. like i dont know 20nm or whatever. a dome one. my boat is only 21ft. also does that require any special power requirments? ive got two deep cycles on a dual switch perko and a third deep cycle running the ff only. i know it has to be shielded from radio antenna or vice versa. just want to be a little safer in bad wx. your thoughts? (i did see a furuno sp. on ebay for like 1500.?? dunno) :cheers:scott

2.2 KW Furuno are about $1K new, I run mine off grp 31 House batt. Works great. Do a search, over the years there have been a few posts this topic.

Yes, several good posts in the salty dogs on small boat radar. Search salty dogs for the last year on something like "furuno radar" and you should find the good posts.

thanks mr herring prob. i looked at it on gps planet. looks like i found a purchase for my dividend this year. what complaints do you have for the 1623. it says its a 16nm range. and that it goes into 1/8mi for nav. are you using all the features on this unit? we will go about 35-40 miles from port to a series of islands. not quite to the gulf of alaska, but out far enough for me. lots of bays and rocks. so i guess the 1623 would be all we need on a foggy day. we arent as crowded up here but through the narrows it can get congested with comm'l traffic. lot of you guys run furuno rads without much complaint down there. one last thing...i looked at furunos site and i see it says "12 or 24 volts dc only, 36 watts, 8w standby." so i understand that u can wire into your dual batt system just fine or did u get a separate deep cycle specifically for the radar? thanks for posting helpful info that i didnt have to search through miles of posts. scott (tree37)

You should be OK w dual batts, would not run radar while on kicker tho, unless you have to.
as to range, that is max height max range for a pretty tall target, my radome is 8' off the water and on really good days I can see land at 9-10 mi. BIG land. The close in range and resolution is what you will need for running inlets.channels, etc. I think the 2.2 KW Furuno does very well at that..just not in really heavy rain - that is going to eat power.
