Want to add a thru hull outlet for my bildge and was wondering where the best location might be,Bilge is located in the floor area just inside the transom. Would like to go out the side of the hull by the stern ,how high, and is that a good place?
Thanks MD

Maybe i should ask ,to the guys that have boats w/bilge pumps ,where are your outlets located?
MD
On my old Jetcraft, the outlet is placed 4" forward of the stern and 4" below the top edge of the side.

I would certainly think it needs to be above the water line. That's where it is on my Arima. Very similar location as GSD's.
My Alumacraft has it located about the same as GSD's.

Thanks guys, this is an old Starcraft 18' and it has very deep sides so i had lots of room to play , I ended up putting it well above the water line but not so far as to have to much rise in the hose, probably an inch or two down from where you guys said, How important do you think the auto switch is, mine is switched at the helm so if needed you can turn it to the on position and leave it , not really planning on going any further than the bays with it or at least untill i get to know her better. I am In the process of going through every little thing and making sure she's sound right now.
Thanks again MD

Mine is just in front of the transom and about 4" down from the rail.

That auto switch is the way to go as it will come on before you have a chance to notice that there may be a problem. Also if you have a low transom and water comes over the back if you are moored, had this happen to me at Odell lake, it will come on and keep things from getting interesting ie: boat full of water

when you run your hose to the outlet put a loop in it to prevent any water from coming in.

Good suggestion on the loop BB. The one that came on my alumaweld is located right under the gunnel on the starboard side about 4" from the stern.
It's a manual, and I'm thinking of installing another one, with an auto switch. Good insurance.

This boat has a pretty high side to it ,i dont think that will be a problem, but i do plan on adding a secondary battery with a perko switch and at that time i think i will add a second bilge right at the base of my bow and put an auto switch on it. I appreciate all the imput from you guys that are more knowlegable than i.
Thanks again MD

No offense MD, but why would you put a bilge pump anywhere but in the stern?

well im not really sure, i guess i was thinking that would be ideal, have yet to put her on the water to see how she floats, it does have kind of a cabin in front so maybe i was thinking she would sit flat due to it having an outboard instead of inboard, and the water would collect evenly, if not i will put it in the stern with the other one but at a higher level and with an auto switch.
This is my first boat where it has a bilge so im just learning where the ideal placement for these things are.
No offence taken, im here to learn

The lowest part of every boat I've owned, or been on, is in the stern, and if water is going to infiltrate and collect, for whatever reason, it'll be at the stern.
I think adding another auto-switched bilge pump is a Very Good Idea. I'm going to add one to my boat too.
Boating is fun, but not cheap.... :bigshock:
Best of luck with it... Tim

I am looking forward to getting back on the water, Not cheap is so true. Just recently purchased a 63 18' Starcraft and spent the last few weeks and more money to go through every inch of this boat and make her tight. Its been alot of fun making her nice and i think this weekend is going to be our maiden voyage in our new used boat, Cant wait  .
Oh and thank all you guys for your imputs, its nice to be able to ask some pro,s before i just start drilling holes everywhere

Don't forget to wire your pump diret to the battery. That way if you turn your battery swith off when the boat is in the water overnight, your pump will still be powered but you have all the electrical stuff creating more electrolysis.

Dont know if this electrolysis stuff only happens in salt or not but this boat will probably only see salt a couple times a year. and its painted on the outside all around.

Electrolysis happens in fresh And saltwater. It has to do with mixing metals in water, to be simplistic.
Check your zincs on the motor. If in doubt, replace 'em, and if they're not bright, use a plastic brush to brighten them, so they continue to do their job.
And enjoy her maiden voyage.... Best of luck!
