Jim,
I did a study on this about a year ago and it's quite facinating. There are three main themes to the prayer, The Blessing, Expanding the territory, and to be free from pain.

One illustration that comes out is Jabez's Faith. He most likely suffered growing up because of what his name means but because of his Faithfulness to God he was granted his wishes. His wishes were to glorify God which relates to the expanding of his territory so Jabez had a heart that God knew and was pleased with.

This is a type of prayer that is not as common as most people pray for the things around them. By building a vision of larger issues and having a strong heart for God, you may just get what you pray for.

Good Luck in your study

I listened to the audio book on the way to the Nehalem and back last fall. It's a good read/listen. Good explanation of boundaries in prayer and what is ok to pray for as long as your thoughts and especially heart is in the right place with the right intentions, which is, as FM2 touched on, to glorify God.
