Earlier today I had the privelidge of hooking up on a bunch of albacore tuna and having the time of my life!
Thanks Krystalflash for helping me realize a dream! Your shameless display of fishing and offshore boat handling skills is in keeping with the highest traditions of big game fishing and was a credit to the church of the bent rod. The score is now Blue Ocean 2, Pilar 7.
We left Newport at daylight and went about 27 miles on heading 282. Found some interesting 62 degree water and started to drag purple and black jigs about 0800 at ten miles an hour.
Within 10 minutes Wheeeeeeeeeeee went the stand up rod and the first bend was on. I looked back to see a 25 lb Tuna do a cartwheel behind the boat. When the sun came out we switched to red and white jigs. We lost two nice fish on handlines when they pulled the cord right through our hands on a wild run and then popped off. Several times I checked a handline to find the terminal tackle busted off to just a few inches of leader! 200# mono leader!
One fish did a to the water takedown and then let go. As the line was reeled in he whaled on it again and almost ripped the rod out of my buddys hands. The look of surprise on his face is going to be hard to forget. We caught a fish every 45 min. or so and ended with a double. Seven fish weighed 168 lbs. All but one was caught on a rod and reel.
'Puffin' was there as well and did 9 fish ending thier day on a double. One of 'Puffin's' fish weighed 31 pounds!
We quit at 1330 and we're still dealing with coolers full of albacore and a Boat-Load-A Tuna stink. Time to fire up the canner and the smoker and go to work.
The bend is your friend!
