I might go down and hit the Santiam later this afternoon for some steelys. I have never actually fly fished for them even though I entered the summer steelhead challange. I was wondering what types of flys you guys catch a lot of fish on. Ive got some egg flys already made up some different colored leech type flies. What would you guys recommend? I also have one of the multi-tip line setups, so it wont be a big deal for me to go deep or shallow. Thanks for the input. :help:

The North Santiam runs cold even during a hot summer. Large (#2)Purple ESL, Purple Angel or similar flies and a type 3 sink tip line. There is good access at several of the parks along the river.

Yup purple (anything dark) leeches and ESL will work... I haven't fished the north but they are great on the south... post a report when you get back

P.S. I did a little search and found the thread from the last fly swap. Look at Twitch_Tackle's purple leech...he is a legend on the santiams  :smash:
Any of these flys will work so don't be afraid to experiment. Dead drift the pocket water and swing leeches through the runs.

I don't know if I would go so far as calling Twitch a legend but he's caught one or two out of the South   I hope you have access to a computer Eric  That purple leach works pretty well though. As the season gets longer and into the fall try natural looking trout nymphs like green rock worm and stone fly nymphs. Sounds funny but it works. Look for fish to hold in th deepest pools or the fast/broken water that you wouldn't normally fish. As they get harrased by Wiley they really drop back down in riffles and deep water. Hope this helps.

I have had lots of success on the south in the fall with a size 10 hears ear or pheasent tail. I fish it just like you would for trout. This time of year the purple articulated leech works well.

Well I actually didnt end up going on the Santiam, but I did go fish the South Fork of the Alsea for some trout. We just threw spinners around, but it was still fun. I think I caught 5 or 6, my buddy Jake caught 4 or 5 and he caught one that was a solid 12", but we didnt keep it because we werent sure what the size limit was or if you could keep cutthroats. We also saw a beaver about 5 feet away!:bigshock: It was fun and Im sure I will use your tips for steelhead later on in the summer. Thanks guys!
