I missed the holdzit contest for the best tip so I thought I would submit this to the board. Here is what I do to keep my leader spools from becoming a mess. Everyone knows that rubber bands cause problems and never work right. Also, everyone also has a pair of old neoprenes that are dead or need to be retired. By cutting strips of neoprene to fit the inside edges of the spools and holding the ends with a pop top your spools will stay neat, won't come unravelled and your tackle box won't be quite the mess anymore.

This was a tip given to me by Norm Ritchie, the president of the Northwest Steelheaders.

I hear ya Joe! If that one made you cry though, this one will reduce you to utter limpness for a couple days. If you anchor above fish holding water, and I know you do, then at least every third trip, or even more often, wash your anchor and lower several feet of anchor rope, then either spray some WD40 or anise oil on the anchor and rope, after you wash your hands and before anchoring up. The soft rope and even the lead are real collecting places for human scent and other negative scents that rarely get cleaned and they are put right above, thus scent into, the fish your after. Not good, even though you've caught some fish w/o washing it. Some of you non-lazy fishers just upped your catch rate. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's my tip for anyone crimping hollow pencil lead at your swivel. Instead of crimping to your knot tag try tieing on a couple of inches of 6-8 lb mono onto a bunch of swivels. Now, instead of keeping these swivels in a box somewhere do this. Tie a string about two inches long onto a D-ring on your vest or something you wear. Now take all your swivels that have two inches of line tied onto them and attach them to this string with a rubberband! It keeps swivels in an easy to get spot and your knots will be stronger by NOT crimping lead onto your tag.

Here's a good tip for fishing jigs in high very colored water, or when you need to add a bit more to the profile of your presentaton, this high water tip has paid off for me when a plain jig, or plain jig and bait wouldnt get the job done, before you tie your jig on your mainline,(I only tie one knot,and fish a fixed float) slide a corky, either a #14 or a #12 up your mainline, and tie your jig on, then "peg" the corky with a toothpick, right at the head of the jig, this increases the visability, and profile of the jig, I even use the green glow corkies, or "glow balls" for low light level steelheading. in high off colored water fish tight to the bank, sometimes I am fishing less than 18 inches from jig to my float. and most of the time you are the only one fishing these areas, just try to drift in 20 inches of soft water, cant be done, not even with the lightest weight. and the jig just hangs there, right in their face, for a longer perod of time. fish on!

Steve, the line minder is nice, but the tears of joy are for a legitimate reason to make beer tabs

RT,what should you use to clean your anchor rope?

Best to clean the rope at home with Fishing handsoaps or Lemon Joy, and rinse thoroughtly. If you wash it in the river use biodegradable "Simple Green", a multipurpose cleaner that naturalist hikers and campers use because it's kind to the environment. - RT

RT I like your tip about the anchor thing. However, I would highly recommend you and anyone else avoid doing it in front of OSP or ODFW, or anybody else like that. Might look a little suspicious (chumming) at first glance. Just a thought.

Storing line? Take your pliers and make a quarter inch cut in the plastic at an angle. Pull line tight through cut and it stays tight. Make sure to cut off little piece of fractured line when using.

Smelly jelly anchor rope? Here's what I do. Sardine wrap my boat hull. Hint - use magic thread (no knot's required). Hint - make sure fillets are strapped down at all points (reduces boat drag). good luck. Let me know how it works.

Chnookie and Tidewater, I only mentioned using WD40 or anise oil on your anchor and lower rope. They aren't bait or bait oil so shouldn't constitute illegal chumming. Perhaps sardine filets wrapped on the anchor is though. I would like your idea of sardine wrapping your hull Tide, if it weren't so far off the bottom in a majority of cases. Since this is what you do, yet asked us to post how it works, why didn't you post how it works for you? Helps to give a little around here to get a little http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif .

The hull bait wraps didn't hold on very well. I made a mistake and put them on while the boat was on the trailer out of the water. When I pushed the boat off the D-boat trailer the trailer skid tore them off. I think that was the day I was going to try your tip on sperm sack chunks for bait soaked in salt water and dye. Never had a chance to try it since my eggs were working so well. Tell me how those sperm sack chunks fished for you??????

RT I realize your intent, just wanted to mention that certain members of OSP, etc. can get a little liberal with those definitions. May be worth a phone call anyway.

Tidewater;
Wouldn't you be a bit concerned that one of those Oversize Sturgeons might come by and swallow your rig?

I agree Chnookie. And Tide, you must be hanging around Marty's BB. The male fish milts sack cut chunks do work a little, especially if you are fishing on holed up fish that become more territorial. Don't fish them near spawning redds though. This info was passed on to me by a couple guide friends. I personally don't have the ... ah .. balls .. to mess with the sacks much. Don't want to gross you out, but I've also heard that some old coggers fry them to eat. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'd rather eat the eggs if I was starving on an island with fish nearby. That's natural food, right. - RT
