A question for RT and anyone else who might know:
I've always targeted 'way' north coast streams for steelhead (ie. Big Cr., Gnat Cr., etc.) and am looking for someplace closer with bank access to take a 'first timer'. Any recent news on Clack, Sandy, N.F.Nehalem, Wilson or ??? We're planning on Saturday (as I'm sure everyone else is). Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hey Chuckdog, I used to live in Wilsonville. I called Jacks on the Sandy yesterday and the run is moving in. People are picking up fish at the RR bridge. I've always been one to want photo proof, but with their reputation you can bank on the info. Tim at Fishermans said today that it is slow on the Clack.

Guys-
Check river conditions and weather before you burn gas! Heavy storms hitting and rivers are forecast to flood (Wilson's already getting a run at it). Gorge area is pretty icy right now, too, although forecast is for heavy rain and wind.
As for bank access, Wilson is pretty good in spots as are most of the coastal rivers.

Chuck, the good news, those rivers you mentioned have all been producing fish, summers and winters. The bad news, the Wilson for example rose about 2 feet overnight with more to come. I think I'll sleep in tomorrow.

As of 7:41 am this morning, when my reel birdnested so bad I had to go to work, the lower Clackamas (High Rocks) was getting muddy. I watched the water come up a few inches while I was there. Looks like we finally got our precip.

ChuckDog, you already got the right answers here. The only thing I would add would be to sleep in a bit until Jack's opens and give them a call to see if it's worth it to plunk some eggs with Spin N Glos in close to the bank on lower Sandy River holes; for a few hours the rest of the morning. Their number is 503-665-2257. - RT

A good way to keep in touch with the North Fork nehalem is to call 503-368-5670. That is the recording at the hatchery that gives a summary of the action, or lack of action http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
