Got over to Camp Sherman on Friday about 3:30, picked up some flies and headed in search of a camp site. I couldn't believe how full the camp grounds were already. I settled on a site at the Gorge Campground. When I asked Mark at the Camp Sherman store what was happening he told me it had been REAAAAAAAL slow. Folks I talked to at the Bamboo Rod Fair were saying the same thing. Everybody I talked to on the river said the same. Let me tell you, IT IS SLOWWWWWWWWW. But fun none the less.
Hit the Rod show Saturday morning around 11:00 and met up with Scoutfish. We took in the show and ran into Troutgirl and her friends. After lunch we headed off for an afternoon of fishing. Thanks to Scoutfish I learned some new water and how to fish it. Great learning weekend for me. Scoutfish took me to one of his super duper secret holes where there won't be anybody fishing. Got to the end of the road and around the corner and what do we find? Troutgirl slipping into waders. We got robbed I tell ya! :bricks: If somebody had to beat us there I'm glad it was Troutgirl.
Sunday morning I got somewhat lucky and it had to be an accident but I caught a 6" brown. :bigshock: I think that about outdid everybody else on the river this weekend.
Thanks Scoutfish for a good weekend  and Troutgirl.......good to see you again. I don't remember your friends name tell them it was good to meet them too.

Maybe next year the fishing will be a little better, but
this year I meet some very nice people.
This time of year the river is full of swimmers and
rafters and dogs.
Lets try for a ifishers campout after the kids go back to
school. The nights are cool but the day temps are still
in the seventy's.

Arnie you're way ahead. There's always a run for the money with us in late Sept. Oct. And then the whining satisfaction on the Crooked in Nov. or Early Feb. Who knows? We did the early March thing up the road to Locked gate one year too. Whatever it is, let's do it! The Metolious is always a skunk for me. It's like Vegas; I go there with 20 $3 flies and expect to leave with no of them. Anything I come home with I consider a victory. And, that is in spite of catching any fish...

Bob-
shhhhhhh on the secret place.
See the nice thing about the Metolius is consistent statistics. Zero is zero is zero. You can count on it.
Fishing was very tough. Tiny size 28 bugs that I cannot even ID were coming off and I think that's what the fish were after, mostly. Oddly enough they were still chasing golden stones too.
I had several rise to the golden stone on Friday afternoon. Then on Saturday morning I couldn't raise anything. Went to the bamboo rod show and met several friends and had a great time, but the fish were calling. Headed back to the secret spot and just beat Bob. Had a fish take a swipe at the yellow stimulator on the first caste. Had a couple more swipes and I hooked up. That fish made a 3' run sideways and came unbuttoned. :hoboy: That was it. Nothing more after that. Didn't touch another fish. Went back to the ledge and watched the big fish feeding in the depth. At least that's fun.
Entirely beautiful place to get skunked again.
I learned a ton at the rod show. Made some new friends around the campfire and will definitely go back again next year. I felt like I was getting to learn from some really amazing fisherman and craftsmen. Pretty amazing how this information gets passed along on the river, and at the campfire.
Good to see you Bob. And just know that although I beat you to the spot, it was a consistent non-provider.

Bob-
My friends were Thomas & Cyndi. They took me on my first drift trip several years ago. Thomas spent alot of time teaching me how to caste back then. He spent a lot of time helping improve it this weekend.
Cyndi and I have been scheming and trying to figure out how I can get my pontoon this week. She's got some old trailer that we might work on after work some this week. Ya gotta love a gal who has a fleet of boats. And that her husband does too.
I've got a lot to learn from them about whitewater and boats, so I was glad to show the the secret spot on the river. I wish they could have gotten a fish. I think you did catch the one fish that would bite this weekend. .

You know what they say troutgirl, a rise on the first cast means no fish all day! Sorry about your luck, but any day on the Metolius is a good one! It's by far my favorite river, although catching fish there is really tough! A rise on the Met. is a good day and I don't care who you ask! Nice work!

I agree on fishing the Met. I grew up camping on that river. I completely don't care if I catch a fish. I love that place. Fishing is just a good excuse for wasting gas to drive over the mountain and fall in love with that place again.
Thank you to everyone who helps keep it cleaned up. There are a lot of people there in the summer. Luckily seems like most everybody works hard to pick up their garbage and find the line snarls and flies. Its not the case with other places. A gentleman rod builder from California who was at the bamboo festival kept commenting on how clean it is for having so many people. He's right. I wish that would spread across the state. Its nice to get to a place and feel at peace and not distracted by the litter everywhere.

Thank you to everyone who helps keep it cleaned up.
I stopped and picked up a paper bag full of stuff and started grumbling, when Scoutfish says, "maybe it belongs to the guy fishing right here." I didn't see the guy on the other side of the bush. I almost walked away with his lunch.

During these tough weeks, consider fishing a small wet ant off the dry stonefly (which should be a Clark's Stone). Fish it along the edges and seams where terrestrials would end up.

As long as you are not catching fish, you can tie on a 6" bunny streamer and not catch bull trout. At least the fish you are not catching will be BIG.

Gary K & TC- did that. I just wasn't gonna get a fish. Tried ant both black and red, big streamers for bull (would have been scary on the 5wt, but I tried for awhile).
Nada. Didn't happen. Its ok though, there is definitely, always a next time on the Met.

Hey TC, nice idea, but that's the cost I was talking about earlier. You feel like a big man fishin' for big fish until you hit a snag at the bottom with your $3 fly and start using astronomy, biology, horticulture and calculus trying to get it back without freezing to death.
My nickel. D

The best day I ever had on the Met was in Feb. It was 5 degrees outside and sunny. There were little yellow stoneflies hatching. No kidding. Great day. Warmer wading than not.
