Everybody has a favorite. What is the ideal plug for Chinook?
All of the input on this board has improved my knowledge, that's for sure.
Thanks all,
Shannon
Mag Wiggle Wart
K16 Kwikfish ( is that a plug?? )

There are so many colors in todays market. Is it preference on color of plugs or do you pluggers beleive there is an ideal color?

Shannon-
If I can only have one plug, it will be a Mag Wiggle Wart in solid orange. They will dive to about 20 feet on 100 feet of line if needed and seem to do great in both off color and clear water. They also work really well in fast current and relatively slow current with a "searching" motion.
Second choice would be a Mag Wart in silver with red herringbone.

Shannon, that's one of those hypothetical Q's that is fun but won't help with overall plug selection because there are so many different conditions that require so many different plugs and presentations. For fun though, it would be a toss up between a K-15 Kwikfish and a Mag Wart in my custom "Injured Baitfish" pattern (half spray painted 'saphire blue metalic' and half left chrome - side to side, not front to back - with a flame red arrow shaped piece of lure tape put under the back end, and one tape fisheye put under the blue side of the nose section). I would also remove the two stock hooks and use a 1 1/4" bead chain to extend a large treble back from the belly eyescrew; taper shaping a small piece of red colored backer rod foam threaded on the hookshank to keep it near neutral bouancy and thus in the 'strike zone'(lose less fish with this rigup). I would also wrap a sardine filet, that I soaked in red color cured salmon egg juice, on the belly of the Kwikfish or a combo of egg and sardine juice soaked into the small foam piece on the Mag Wart hook. Whew, probably more than you asked for http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif eh? - RT

Shannon, If you want to call a Kwikfish a plug, I would try a chrome one with a green or chartruse bill. Wrap a sardine or herring filet on the belly with some stretchy string. The boys up at Draino lake in Washington like to drag magnum wiggle worts or kwik-fish aka...flat-fish in the bright red or orange. The favorite plug on the Sandy river is a small wiggle wort in a pirate color...red,blue,chrome..Once you get out there with some other fishheads you'll see what they are using and if you just bring some basic stuff, the next time you get to the tackle shop you'll know what to buy. Just ask whats been working, at the tackle shop, on what paticular river or fish and they should be able to steer you in the right direction...Fishhead Vic

Quick tackle trivia question. How in the world did Kwikfish ever get away with selling the identical Flatfish design under another name? Do lures have patents?
Have you seen the "Alvin" at G I Joes that is an identical replica? Has the stamped 'A' and everything!

I know one thing, the alvin at GI Joes has a different # of spots making the A. Funny huh. As far as plugs go, I don't have a boat so I very rarely do, but when I have a K-15 Kwickie has treated me right.

HT, I think patents have an expiration duration. And some fine line mods can get copy products by the patents; unless a court order to cease is sought and won. It happens all the time in the golf club industry. - RT
Cop Car hot shot for Chinook is a killer in water with 2-3 feet visibility. I also like the mag warts and quick fish with raps.

My favorite plug for Chinook, is the Wiggle
Wart, in Flouresent Red w/black back & black
stipes on the side, and a clear bill. This plug, rigged properly w/both hooks removed, and a split ring, swivel, split ring, and #1
treble hook attached to the belly of the plug
will easily dive to 15'-18'. This plug has caught me many Springers in the Clack, and even Fall Chinooks on the Wilson and Trask,
it is by far and away the best plug color in my tackle box. It also works great for Coho, and Steelhead. I'm not sure why that color works so well, but it does. But it must be rigged with only one hook, off the belly, and it must be extended back with the split rings and swivel to work the best.
Good Luck, Give it a try!

It's old... It's reliable... It's not impressive... It's small enough for steelhead... It's big enough for chinook... It works in clear water and murky water...big water, small water... It keeps workin' when all the fad lures come and go. It's embarrassingly boring....

Thanks for the replys. I had thought out of 500 members there would have been more experienced plug fisherman, especially for Chinook. For the experienced few that had input, I thank you.
