Hey Osprey, is that like the old bear hunting story....you don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than your huntin'partner? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif I use backer rod, maribou, and crystal flash to make homemade "aero-fly" type drift lures. I thread the maribou and the crystal flash thru the backer rod with a large needle, and hold it in place with a dab of superglue. Then I thread the lure onto a pre-tied hook and leader. Works great!

I wanted to hear what contraptions as far as lures/customizations folks have come up with in the past or may be working on in the present. You should have seen some of the bass plugs I came up with for topwater...surprisingly lots of em caught fish. The other night while using my dremel, I got out a large spin n glow and removed the white wings. I cut a slit into a large orange-scale corkie, placed the wings in the slot, and with a dab of glue...WA LA. Gonna see how this ghetto lure pays off. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I break out the dremel, wire spinner, paint can, plastic liquids, sponges....I just love making my own crap...Best way to test it is to let it sit for a month, then ask yourself if you really want to use it.
Speaking of ghetto spinglow uses....how about putting one on a jig http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I heard you say dremmel....I Will let you figure out how.

Good post 'Yall. If we use our imaginations, the sky is the limit for fishing lures that could work. BTW 'Yall, your first steelhead invention on here is similar to a Glo-Go or Birdie. Should work well.

This one is about improvisation. While fishing Bager lake (about 15 acres near Lake of the Woods by Klamath Falls). I was using a mosquito with a clear torpedo bobber. You know the weighted type. I noticed there was alot of fat dragon flies zipping around. And as soon as one would settle on the water one would inevittably get sucked up by a 16+" brook trout. They were even trying to eat my bobber. No kidding they were big fat suckers.
All I was catching was 10 or 12" rainbows every hour or so and didn't have any Dragon flies. I was up there for a over night backpack trip with a lady friend-platonic and another friend from OIT. She had a brand new set of thongs with a black sole and I had some long shanked worm hooks. I finally convinced her to let me cut a 2" strip off of a thong to use as the body. So, I threaded the strip of thong onto the hook and 1/2 hitched on a blade of grass and voila. A dragon "fly". I cought a 16er within 20 min. and lost one and broke off an even larger one. Oh, well dinner time. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If she cut 2" off of a thong and while you were out fishing...I would be thinking dinner time too....umm because of that nice trout you caught http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Two years ago while fishing for shad on the willamette at Oregon City, the guy anchored right next to me was catching about 6 fish to my one. I asked him what he was using and he showed me a tab from a beer can that he had attached two split rings to. One for the hook and one for the swivel to tie on to.
