I talked to a guy whose father in law volunteered up there and he said only 13 fish were caught. I went over to the westfly.com place and checked it out for myself. It looks like there were quite a few fish caught, but only 40(12 on Sat. and 28 on Sun.) made it to the pens to be transplanted. (a lot of fish died). It was cool to read about all the fish they "took", or "brought to hand". Sounds like there were some nice ones too, a lot 5-7 pounders. Too bad most of the fish were gut hooked and ended up in the filet bucket. So much for conservation I guess, its a wonder how Neandrethal tournament guys ever keep their fish alive. Interesting reading, there are also some pics. Its funny seeing these guys who detest the bass so much out there in their funny looking vests flailing away to eradicate the devil. They took it pretty serious though, over 80 people showed up, they had a bunch of booze food and a big raffle. They even had some shirts made. Not really my deal, but it looks like they had fun. If anyone is interested here is the link to the report: http://www.westfly.com/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=018633 If you go to some more of the recent posts there is a good one about what do now that they didn't even come close to the 300 fish goal. They argue back and forth whether or not to let the "Gearheads" (bass clubs)in there to finish the job. There is some pretty funny discussion in there too. Check it out: http://www.westfly.com/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=018637 Its a pretty good insight into how bass and bass fisherman are perceived by a majority of the public. Kind of opened my eyes anyway. What do you guys think?

i think this post is pretty good insight into how basscaster views the fly fishing public.

as for me, i like any fisherman that carries a garbage bag and brings back any garbage he finds on the river/lake...regardless of what type of rod they are fishing with, or what species of fish they are fishing for...heck...i'm a carp fisherman.

As soon as I read this post I knew that at some point I would see john montana and probably dave smith.

John,
I noticed your name on the other site. And yes as a result of the comments by "some" of the people on Westfly  there will be some backlash here on this thread I am sure. Hopefully those who do read the other site will also note that not all of the guys there were bashing us bass fishermen and that there were some standing up for us. I hope that we will show the flyguys more respect then the ones that did bash us. Just reading other posts from you and dave smith you both sound like guys that just enjoy fishing and don't get so caught up in what spieces the fish are(ie. carp fishing) but instead just fish for the joy of fishing.

With that said I think all you flyfishes might not want to continue reading this post because as I said there just might be some backlash.

A couple of points. For 1 every effort was made to save every fish caught and the thought by the odfw guys is that the main pen was put in too shallow of water and the fish ran out of oxygen and died.

Personally i was very upset that we had those losses and that we didn't have good luck in catching more fish because i would like to see them all transported to a warmwater fishery. I don't it has anything to do with the "bass fishermen"....I fly fish for bass so i guess i'm a bass fisherman too. There will more then likely be another effort this next spring earlier in the year i would invite you all to grab a cheap fly rod and come up.

:yeahthat:  :laugh:That's what I said too Doug. The only thing I will say on this issue is I'm glad to see they at least tried to save some of those big bass for transplant before deciding to Rotenone the whole lake like Diamond. (one of the proposed ideas) Hats off to all who tried that weekend

:yeahthat: I heard they took some fish to Prineville Res.
There are alot of fish in Davis lake. It is a shame they may have to rotenone it. I used to get over there once a year and fly fish for big trout in my pontoon boat I had.

I'm going to try to make it to the "bass bash" next year no matter what kind of gear I have to use. It sounds like it would be fun. I've been bass fishing for over 20 years and before I really got into bass fishing I used to fly fish for trout. I've never caught a bass on a fly rod, so it could be a blast. I hope they don't rotenone it.
