Of all of the freshwater white meated fish, thus far I have enjoyed eating small mouth bass the best. Does anyone have any ideas for me where the bigger good eating smallies might be caught closer to Albany, Oregon?

Why do you want to eat the bass?

Try just downriver from Wah Chang. I understand that the third eye on the SM is especially delicious.

it seems any where you catch bass around here you dont want to eat. From all the pollutants in the water.

I think you will be fine as long as you go back in your time capsule to the era where fisherman said things like "thus far". Not nearly as many pollutants back then. Don't go back too far, though. Smallmouths have only been here 150 years or so. Cheerio, my good man. I should hope that one as elliquent as you doth catch a fine bass and it makes for excellent table fare. ta ta.

You might want to try near any discharge pipe that dumps into the willy?I'm sure the fish will gather at these areas, and will be huge!!! Eat-Up

whoops, i think you just did! j/k
I don't understand the big Bubb Rubb about eating a few smallies. Obviously this guy is just trying to get a rise out of everyone, and anyone with the time for that is lost in life, but seriuosly, like Dave said, Smallies have been around for a century and a half. There not goin anywhere so eat a few keepers if they live in decent water no? That being said, i do not advocate eating 16"+ fish as that dilutes genetics, but why not scarf a couple 12-14's.

right angle,
The only closes places that I know in that area is Foster and Green Peter. Well those are the only ones for "good eating" at least. Any you can get some size there at times.
tnj,
Yes, there are some people who will flame you for keeping bass, but in this case if you read the post again you will see they are talking about the fish in the Willy. I happen to know what gets dumped in that river and you could not pay me enough to eat a fish out of there. I usually keep baby wipes on the boat when I fish the Willy in Salem just so I can wash my hands.

Alas! Whilst it is not a reasonable conundrum for thou to harvest thine miniscule Micropterus sporadically, one must fashion to return thine larger quarry to the watery depths. If one can absolve thine rapaciousness and canst dost these deeds, thyself shall be rewarded with a plentiful bounty in which art thine seeketh.

Thanks for some of the replies. I believe in catch and release, I usually release smaller fish to get bigger; I also try to release female fish that seem to be full of eggs by having a distended belly. I do enjoy the light flavorful texture of smallies. The Willamette could use a lot of cleanup. I wonder, is there a certain age or larger size in which smallies no longer reproduce? Perhaps just keeping smallies at this non reproducing older and larger stage might be better? Any thoughts out there?

i do believe it is better to keep smaller ones because it takes so long for big ones to get big

Here is some basic biology for you RA. The bigger the fish, the more eggs and the better the genetics. Those are the fish you want to continue to reproduce, and they continue to spawn throughout thier life cycle. Plus the older the fish, the more toxic pollutants build up in its system over time. If you are going to eat some, eat the smaller ones. Or better yet listen to Grant, I hear that corn studded brown trout bite is on. Wow, I can't believe I just said that. Just when I think I set the floor, someone goes below and beyond. I guess I'm going to have to try a little harder. He he.

I am no biologist(I only play one on the web), but smb and lmb are pretty similar as far as reproduction. If you saw the story of the 25lb lmb that was not entered as a world record ealier this year, the fish was on her bed. Which means she was reproducing. From everything I have ever heard about bass they never stop reproducing.
You also might want to read page 3 of Hagg Lake Hoggs. There is some good advice on keeping bass. Please don't take this as you should never keep a smb. Keeping "cookie cutter" fish is usually a good thing for the health of the population. Just sit down and think about it before you go fishing next time and I'm sure common sense will guide you.
