Well, Friday I made a long awaited trip to the Deschutes to fish for trout. It has been a while since I have fished the Deschutes and for trout. The crowds were minimal and I didn't see to many other people fishing. The hatch of rubber rafts started about 10 AM, but they were courteous and did their best to not disturb the holes we were fishing.

The weather was good and hot, as usual. It was around 90 most of the day with the welcome occasional cloud cover. I finally left around 4 PM and there was good cloud cover developing which I'm sure improved the evening fishing.

We arrived about 6 AM, but it was light enough to fish at 5:30 AM. Caddis flies were all over the bushes and trees but rising fish were sporadic. I did catch a few on dries, but I most of my success was on nymphs. Successful flies were the usual suspects like para-adams, ehc's, hares ears, pt's, and prince nymphs. None of my fish were lunkers despite my best efforts. All of them were nice fat fish in the 12"-17" range with exception to the occasional minnow. I had forgotten how beautiful those redsides are.

I did take a few photo's and if any of them are any good I'll post 'em a little later.

I really had great time on Friday and I can't wait to get back.

I have been trying to instill in my kids a love for fly fishing and all that goes with it. We have been practice-casting in the park to hone their skills to a razors edge  and it certainly paid off. Later in the day I met up with my wife and kids and here some hero shots of their first fish on a fly rod:

Those fish weren't the only ones hooked.

My first reaction to the fish was that they are Northern Pike Minnow (squaw fish). Can't see all that well, but the mouth looks right. What kind of fish is irrelevant to the joy of youngsters hooking a fish for the first time on a flyrod. I can't wait to get my grandchildren into any kind of fish for the first time.

Also, your 17 inch redside qualifies as a lunker. No doubt about it!
