Im taking my first trip to Alaska this summer to fish the TALACHULITNA @ Talaheim Lodge. I have been busy getting geared up and learning to tye again. I tied up a bunch of 10mm beads with glo yarn on size 4 hooks copied from a earlier post on egg patterns. Went to the craft store and got 10mm yarn puff balls and put on hooks, real fast. After tying several dozen I notice that most stores sell #6 hooks and smaller.
Im going up August 5th to 12th chasing big Bows and Silvers mainly. My guide has suggested super large egg patterns in his equipment list. Are these 4 hooks with 10 mm beads too large? Would 6 or 8mm beads on #6 or #8 hooks more suited?

I used 6mm and 8mm mostly when I was up there, and occasionaly a 10mm. I myself would not go up there without a nice selection of 6mm and 8mm beads, mostly a vast variety of different colors (solid and opaque), some painted, some not. I would also take a dozen or so flesh flies. I've seen big bows that want nothing to do beads/egg patterns, but as soon as a flesh fly hit the water, fish on. And when I say hit the water, I literally mean slapping the fly on the water. The bigger the splash the better. But your guide knows that particular area better than either of us, so I would trust what he tells you.
