I just wanted to share a nice fish I caught last night. I was fishing a local area near Salem drop-shotting plastics, and kept getting bit, but no hookups. I thought perhaps they were some sort of small panfish, so I changed to a small swim bait, and caught the most beautiful bluegill I have ever seen. This fish was 8" long, but its coloration was just incredible! Of course, the camera was back in my office at work....(I hate it when I do that). The blue-green spots were just incredibly vibrant. Well, I tired of catching the gills, and switched to a blue and white spinner bait....some guy came walking by on the path through the woods, and starting telling me all about how I was in the wrong spot for bass, and he had seen an 18 lber in here just last week...well, I wasn't listening too hard, made my first cast, and wham, stuck one! She took out line like Jerome Bettis. By the time I got her in this guy is all excited! My digital scale picked a perfect time to die on me...(They need batteries from time to time). I have to guess on her weight, but I figure she went 3 1/2 to 4 lbs easy. Very healthy fish, very thick. It made my evening. The guy as he walks off says, "I guess you know what you are doing." Little did he know it was pure luck! Well, I guess if you aren't fishing, you can't catch them! :yay:

Great story. Way to go. A true fisherman can find beauty in an 8 inch bluegill.

Hey nice job on that one! Don't you love that when people assume you are clueless and start in with the seminars? I must have a blank, lost look to me because I get that all the time. I agree, a male bluegill in full spawning colors is just breathtaking. Good job! Dave

What you caught may not have been a Bluegill .It may have been a Pumpkinseed panfish . The Pumpkinseed looks a great deal like a Bluegill , except the coloring is more vivid and much brighter in color . If in fact it was a Pumpkinseed , you landed a throphy sized one . You should consider joining the Oregon Bass And Panfish Club . I believe that you would be in the lead for the biggest Pumpkinseed caught this year .
We have members that come to the meeting from Salem . Maybe you could share a ride .
This club is a very friendly family based club that is willing to help people learn new ways to catch fish . By the way , i will take luck over skill on most days . Nice story , thanks for sharing .

Congrats on the fish, and nice story too.
I have been catching gills that are really vivid in color too, I think there just as fun especially when they are schooling!
Don't feel bad about the camera, last month I forgot the tackle box :hoboy:.
