Had a friend stop by last night, he has a Honda 50 4
Stroke on a 16 foot boat, its a new Motor this year, just past break in, went to Wickup and it would not troll for Trout, brought it back and had them do a complete tuneup then yesterday took it to Green Peter and same problem, it would troll for awhile then start loading up, any body have and kind of advise, is it too big to troll with??? Honda four stroke should be able to troll a 16 foot boat but not being a outboard owner don't know for sure. Let me know he is ready to make an anchor out of this motor.........Ray

Silver Eagle,
I had the same problem with a Honda 30. Would troll fine for a while and then load up and die. Dealer had it back several times and did the tune up and set to the 'Factory Specs' without solving the problem. Said they couldn't get it to stall out in their tank.
That motor just wasn't enough for my boat anyway, so I traded it in for a 50. (I had a 45 several years ago and it would troll just fine.) So far this new 50 is doing just fine, no loading or dying problems at all, but the slowest I can get with it is about 2.5 mph. I ended up getting a 5 hp kicker to troll with to get below that speed.
I know this doesn't help you with the problem, but in your friend's shoes I would just keep going back to the dealer. Hondas aren't supposed to do what my old 30 and your friend's new 50 are doing. The dealer should either fix it or take the motor back, IMHO.

I owned a '98 Honda 50 for 5 years, and it would troll all day and never load up or die. Take it back and get it fixed right, or get a new one. One thing to check.... I now have a Honda 75 (and an 8) and on the 75 the idle ports carboned up and had to be cleaned, and all four idle mixture screws had to be replaced, from old and/or bad gasoline. I am never going to buy more gasoline than I can use in a month, ever again.

The idle mixture could be too rich. Prolonged periods of ideling rich will foul the spark plugs. Make sure to use the correct spark plug as well. An incorrect plug may not be "hot" enough to keep from fouling. Good luck.

Silver Eagle, My three-year-old Honda 50 (on an 18-foot aluminum boat) has spent most of its life trolling with no problems. Sometimes for 6 or 8 hours at a stretch, and that's with the idle adjusted a couple hundred rpm's lower than stock, too. Something is wrong with your buddy's motor for sure.
My only problem is that it moves my lightweight boat too fast, so I have to drag a sea anchor to catch chinook.
